Hi guys,
Has anyone replaced a Drott clam cylinder, or rebuilt one? Mine is the 2 cylinder type, 3/4 yard bucket on a JD350. One cylinder rod is bent right at the end near the packing, and the packing is shot. I could probably pound it out straight, but still need to find the seal kit or new packing at least. Any ideas where to buy parts for these or has anyone changed out the cylinder with a modern one? I'll see if I can find a local shop to match up the main packing seal. It came out as 2 rings that look like seals, not "chevron" packing.
Thanks

Hi guys,
Thanks for the help. We have one hydraulic shop in the area (small rural town) and they service all the local farm and industrial machines, and they quoted me $500 for a new rod and packing. The rod is only 18" or so and 1.5" dia. Of course I could send it out of town for rebuild but then there's shipping and all that stuff.
I'll keep you posted...heading off to a IH shop shortly that has many seals and packing to choose from, and if they don't have a press, then our machine shop will straighten it for me.
thanks!

Thanks for all the help boys.
I found a shop I had never heard of...wow! I could spend hours there. Over 10 acres of fun. They are a machinery repair shop, all sorts of heavy equipment, and several buildings that have tons of parts. The parts guy spent 15 minutes finding the seals for me, nothing is marked or labeled, just a wall of seals. Anyway, he ended up just giving them to me. His press was tied up with a big job so he couldn't straighten out the rod so I took it to my usual machine shop and asked if they just give it a little tweak in their press. The press operator must have missed that day in school in grade 12, as he proceeded to put it in the press and use the threaded part of the rod to push on, and before he could even get the rod moving, busted off the threaded portion. Don't think I have ever seen my blood pressure rise so quickly when he came back to the office to tell me what happened.
Anyway, they are making a new rod for me from 10-45 precision ground steel, which I am not sure what it is, but they assure me it's what they make hydraulic rods from.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks all,
Paul

Well it's all back together. The machine shop did a great job on the new rod. I installed the new seals and o-rings and put it all back together in about 10 minutes. Up and running great, no leaks, no fallback. It's been holding position for an hour now. See how it does overnight.
Thanks for the help!
Now back to the engine.
Cheers
