450 brake relining

Post by SEAL » Fri Feb 13, 2015 10:05 am

I am going to reline my own brake bands. I had to cut the drums 1/16 to flatten them so I am planing to use 5/16" x 2 1/2" brake lining. Does anyone have a source for a semi metallic material of that size? McMasters and everyone else I could find only has that size in non metallic. Is non metallic an acceptable substitute for my application? Does non metallic machine the same as semi metallic for the rivet recessing?

I have read both of those, Thanks. RedDirt used 1/4" x 2 1/4" for his 350. This size is readily available. The 450 has 2 1/2" and I need 5/16" to make up for cutting the drums. This I can't find in semi metallic.

If you are going to rivit everything together can you use a 1/16" shim under the 1/4" shoes? Just an idea to take up the space.

I rebuilt my 450B clutches and brakes using mostly REDDIRT's instructions.

I am using the same instructions by RedDirt. His was a 350 that has smaller brakes.

Did you have to cut your drums down and if so by how much? I need 5/16" thick linings to make up for cutting the drums down to get rid of the ridges on the drum surface. My problem is that I can't find the semi metallic that is 5/16" x 2 1/2".

Did you use semi metallic? The material you used looks way different than what RedDirt used. Do you have the part # and place of purchase for the material you used?

I have never worked with semi metallic brake lining material. When you cut your linings into the four pieces what did you use to make the cut? A knife or a saw of what kind? If a saw will cut the lining material I could buy the 5/16" x 3" and rip it down to 2 1/2" on my table saw. That would add about $25 to the cost but I would have the correct size that I need.
