450c 6 way blade conversion??

Post by Jgnobles » Sun Feb 15, 2015 6:18 pm

I have a 450c with the blade frame on the outside of the tracks. It has a manual blade. My question is has anyone took this frame and made it a hydrallic adjust 6 way blade? If so what did you modify? My dozer has a unused aux valve on it.
Thanks

450 blade.

Post by pondhogvt » Tue Feb 17, 2015 11:10 pm

yeah I did.. I bought a complete six way hydraulic blade and put that on instead,, but you need the valve spool and handle also,, cost me $2500.

Just putting on tilt would be a big improvement and then you wouldn't have to change all the hydraulics as you said you have the extra spool..

Good luck.. Mark.

450 6 way conversion

Post by NWJD fan » Wed Feb 18, 2015 12:09 pm

The outside dozer on the 450C was available in 2 configurations. The 6410 is likely what you have with all manual adjustments and the 6415 (I think) which had hydraulic tilt but the blade was fixed at 90 degrees for reasons I am not sure. Look in the 450 parts book, it may provide some ideas for hydraulic tilt. I have a straight 350 loader with outside dozer mounted to it and lifted by arms attached to loader boom and a 450C outside dozer. I thought the 6 way hydraulic dozer was a nice idea but not really neccesary until I used 1 for about 10 minutes. Sitting in that seat wiggling the lever to make things append is very easy to get used to. Now I am awaiting delivery of a somewhat tired 350C 6 way dozer.

Yes, mine is the 6410 (I think) it has the all manual adjustments. Yea, I would be tickled with just the tilt feature to be hydro adjust, since I have 1 extra spool, and I hate to spend another $2500 on it.....LOL. I will see if I can find a parts number book somewhere to check. If someone has a few of the part #s I would need for just the tilt I would love to have them.
Thanks for all the info!!!!!

450 blade

Post by pondhogvt » Wed Feb 18, 2015 5:32 pm

In my opinion the which isn't worth much,, but it is still mine.. the 6415 is the best blade ever made by John deere.

#1. it is by far the strongest and will not tear up side frames and track frames like the angle dozer will.

#2. the 6410 you have is easier on frames also but no tilt.

#3 A dozer without tilt is just a toy.. sorry that's my opinion.. I have run dozers for over 40yrs.. mostly big dozers and all they have is a straight blade with tilt.

#4 it is an engineering fact look it up.. that all straight blade dozers with tilt hold approximately 30% to 33% more dirt than the same dozer with all angle blade.

#5 they are strong.. when you try stumping with an angle blade the pivot point is in center of the blade so you have mechanical leverage against you.. you can see the blade flex and usually the hydraulic hose will burst.. the straight blade the force from the corner is transmitted straight back to a steel push arm bolted to track frame ... nothing to break..

#6 and the biggest advantage is the 6415 blade has twice the tilt of the all angle blade,, and when you angle the angle blade the tilt practically disappears,,, real hard to cut a road on a side hill with an angle blade,, just not enough tilt..

they are both just different tools... the angle is a better finish machine and the straight dozer is tougher, stronger, more tilt and less maintenance and pushes more dirt.. plus it is easier on the dozer frames and associated parts.

Just my 2 cents..... Mark.

JD parts listings are available online. Try jdpc.com. Enter 6415 or 450c in the little box in the upper LH corner and that should take you to an appropriate manual.
pondhogvt, I suspect your.02 is worth a fair bit. Definitely no comparison in blade strength between all hydraulic and outside mount manual. I hear Vt. is experiencing some balmy weather, may be out that way for sugaring.

NWJD.... we have had about 6-7 weeks mostly below zero,,, must have set a record somewhere... in the last two weeks we have had one day a week in midweek that gets up to twenty above.. today was sunny and up to 25 above and felt like a heat wave..yesterday morning was -26 and up to 0 by noon,, most days have been between 0 and 10above in daytime and -5 to -25 not counting wind for along time.. everybody is sick of it... hey atleast we have a normal snow fall only 3ft or so,, could be worse south down by Boston they have 5ft but not the bitter cold ... after todays sunny day I predict a great sugaring season but the snow will make tapping difficult and we usually get a womper of a snow storm in late feb or early march...

My 60yr old body wants some sun and please 35 degrees above zero..
goodluck to all.. Mark.

Mark: I'm still working on getting that 2-3 feet off my roofs; at least the shoveling keeps me warm. I'm ready for spring too. Paul

Jgnobles if I understand you correctly you have a additional valve that is available. This could save you some cash from buying a new 3 spool valve, you can add a solenoid operated selector valve fed off of your extra valve to control the angle and tilt function of the blade. I used one on my loader/backhoe when I added a bucket thumb on the loader bucket. I would use the dump/scoop valve normally for that part of it but when I press a button on the valve handle it energizes the selector valve and now the hydraulic flow goes to the thumb circuit. It works for me very well and its only 103.00.

I hope that helps!

Thanks for all the info guys. I think I am going to just try and do the tilt, and leave the angle pART manual for strength issues..........I will ley you know how it goes
