555 transmision overhaul

Post by tizfatboy » Tue Feb 17, 2015 6:58 pm

I have been able to find the parts I needed but a little confused about what disc I should use. Mother Deere wants $126. dollars apiece, I found some for around $50 down to around $20 has anyone had any experience w/after market disc?

clutch disks

Post by Jd450/6-way » Tue Feb 24, 2015 5:27 pm

I got two complete clutch kit's for my 450 crawler for about $750 each side on eBay. They were OE replacement with out the john deere packaging. Made in the States too. It came with the all the steel disks, fiber disks, pilot bearing, pressure plate, throwout bearing and the brake bands. I got my clutch drums turned down on the outside for $40 a piece while I had the clutches apart.

The ones I sell, I have sold thousands of from the same manufacturer in the smaller discs with no problems, not including the 450 discs I have sold. There are junk discs out there, and price is not the determining factor odd as that may seem.

I just took my clutch packs apart and found very little wear on them, most of the wear was in the forward reverse pack. I'll replace the 2 disc next to the piston in forward, and 1 in reverse. The only significant wear in the other 3 packs were next to the piston and Ill replace all 3. This transmission had 5000 hrs on according to the meter, I believe the damage was due to neglect, filters and fluid changes. The ring sealing destroyed all 3 oil collectors piss poor design! in the fist place and compounded by neglect they were designed to fail. New cost on collectors $2300 I will replace all the bearings at at a cost of about $1200. Change Your oil just because its there doesn't mean its lubricating!
