The main differences between the JD350B and JD350C are that the C went to a 3/164 CID engine from the 3/152 CID in the JD350B and that the JD350C changed from dry to wet steering clutches.

Sometime during 1985, the serial number scheme was changed and the new range started in the 700000 range. So, there are some 350C units showing serial numbers in the 700000 range prior to number 723603. However, we do not know the beginning serial number in this new range.

The source of the data is from a farm equipment quick reference guide that's intended to assist dealers in determining the year and current market value of trade-in equipment.

The guide as such only lists the beginning serial number for each year. I'm making the reasonable presumption that the last serial number for any given year is one less than the starting serial number for the successive year.

Thanks to Digitup for sharing the relevent pages from his guide with us so we can determine what year a given machine is.

Additionally, some model numbers contain an extra letter. At some point during the manufacturing of the 350B, they added a letter. Making the model one letter longer. Such as 350BE.

A - Diesel, Loader
B - Diesel, Loader
E - Diesel, Inside Dozer
G - Outside Dozer
J - Drawbar Crawler
W - Wide Track

The meaning of the letters csme from the JD350C manual section 1A3. There was no data on what the difference is between the A and B loaders.

Thanks for putting up the info, I was curious if the 355D had its own s/n batch? Also i have a 350C with a 251xxx s/n (which is a 76' according to the chart) and it has a 3152 in it. Not sure when they switched to the 3164, but i have sales brochures from 75', 79' and 83' for the 350C and they all say 3152 exept for the 83' one. When looking in the parts books all reference to the engines are 3152 engine (engine s/n 329334-590074) was made from 1974 to 1981, and the 3164 engine (engine s/n 590075-621172) was made from 81-83 and engine s/n 100001 was 83' up

The 355D has the same serial number range as the 350D. Deere just changed the model number to bring it in line with the other crawler/loaders as a 'x55' vs. the dozers 'x50'.

The 350 and 350B had the 3/152 (64-75), the 350C had the 3/164 (75-86) and the 350D and 355D had the 3/179 (85-88). As usual, expect to find some overlap near the model break points. Deere always has changed things on the run like that.

There is very little that can be found on the G to H change over.I had last of the Gs and a first of the H s at the same time.The last 450 Gs were absolutely bullet proof and my 450H was a disaster.It was the first H series in Canada the 550H was a lot better made several weeks later on the same line .My son Scott got the 550H keys handed to him from Chad Little ,Deeres Nascar driver at the time Got the photo around some where of that day,There were some big growing pains in that plant right then .I had quite the time when they changed to the 550G series from the 550Bs because of a strike that had previously sent a lot of Deere lovers over to CAT that was our first Asian pussy.Digitup.

Note:

There is an overlap in 1975 where JD350B and 350C models were made concurrently. We do not know the exact serial number of the last JD350B as a result.

The main differences between the JD350B and JD350C are that the C went to a 3/164 CID engine from the 3/152 CID in the JD350B and that the JD350C changed from dry to wet steering clutches.

However, there are some late JD350B's out there with wet steering clutches. The JD350B units would have been produced along with the JD350C until the 3/152 engine stock was depleted, but the JD350B units changed over to the wet steering clutches used in the JD350C when the stock of dry-type steering clutch parts was depleted.

So since my model is T4F3D and serial = 038883T then according to this
list "1966 16184 - 42484" my dozer is a 350 straight 1966 .

There appears to be a typo or misskey in the numbers for the 350C crawlers. I found this when I was looking for year built info for a poster on another forum. The last s/n for 1977 shows to be 287209 and the first 1978 shows to be 278210. Stan said the list had only starting s/ns and I am guessing he miss typed the ending number for 77.

That would make sense as in that era the equipment company's were doing what was called Canadian percentage content so a lot of loader arms and buckets as well as back hoe beams and buckets were made in Canada just to get Canadian content That was fazed out in the early seventy's for Deere,Cat, Harvester,Case etc But for Kubota ,Yanmar,Daedong and the Asian manufacturers it lasted into the late eighty's I had several John Deere backhoes that were a fair % of Canadian content I think it was the same parts just welded together on this side of the border .If you do a goggle earth and look up of a little town in southern Ontario called Dain City Ontario [Deere bought the Dain seed drill works in the 40s]in that town years ago you could see JD green on everything and I mean everything is John Deere green as far as the eye can see there was a area that was yellow that has been long gone and even the green you see is nearly all gone Deere had to clean up there act .Seeders ,air seeders ,drills ,cultivators ,cultimulcher's ,some plows and manure spreaders and the first AMT600s-ATV's were made there just so They had Canadian content .Digitup.

All the loaders would have been serial numbered seperately, even the two cylinder stuff was. The chassis serial number would be in the same location as on your other crawler.
When I worked for Deere in the late 90's, the Welland, Ontario plant was still making the ag loaders, not sure if they still are or not.

I am sure that you will find you have a 350 [crawler tractor for the C] and it is a B series machine always go for the 2nd letter on the older machines to find the series of your crawler build you will find the serial #will match up better Just last week I found a other auctioneer trying to sell a 550 as a 550C I told him to not sell it if he didn't know what he was selling .I had to explain that this started with the MC and 40C crawlers at the Gs we didn't have that problem in serial number

Hi,

In the serial number string, E means Loader and F means Dozer from the factory. But, in the model number E means economy, IIRC. Meaning one without all the toys. To figure it out for sure, decode the serial number string.

C = Collar Shift
D = Directional Reverser

6. Sequence serial number of six digits

7. This letter designates the plant:

Hi,

The letters stand for major redesigns.

In the early days, they changed the model numbers: 40, 420, 430, 440. Then they used letters for the type: S for standard, C for crawler, etc. Somewhere along the 420, they started using I for industrial. The letters separated machine styles.

By the time they revamped Dubuque into an Industrial machine only plant, they decided to make the machine types their own model number prefaced with JD to indicate industrial machines from agricultural.

So, the new model for the smallest industrial crawler was the JD350. There was no JD350 wheel tractor. They were all crawlers. They made that for years, then performed a major redesign. They called that the JD350B. They made that for years as well, then redesigned it again and it became the JD350C.

That was a major redesign in that they redid the final drives from dry steering clutches to much longer lived wet clutches. They made that for years and then redesigned one last time into the JD350D.

The problem is, way too many people recall when the 'C' meant Crawler. So, when they get around to re-decal-ing the thing after performing a 'rebuild in a can', they stick on 'JD350C'. - and it is probably an original JD350 'no letter' machine.

Which, we tell by the serial number list at the beginning of this thread.

BTW, we call a 'no letter' a 'straight', as in "a straight 350". That does not mean it has nothing bent or twisted in it.
