Question on 2010 Engine Swap from JD 45 Combine
Question on 2010 Engine Swap from JD 45 Combine
Good evening-
I have seen it mentioned many times over the years that an engine from a JD 45 combine can be used as a replacement for a 2010 engine. There is a 45 combine in an upcoming auction so had the following questions about that:
1) Are the engines for a 45 combine exactly the same as a 2010 engine, or is it that they use slightly different engine components but will "bolt in" because they have the same bellhousing and flywheel setup? I assume they are same engine because they are both 165 ci, is this correct?
2) My understanding is that the 45 combines were manufactured from 1954 through 1969, and the so I assume the combine would have to be from 1961 through 1965 to be a replacement?
3) Anything else I need to know?
Thanks in advance.

I don't have any idea how it compares to a crawler, but I have 2 45 Combines, one that I use and one for parts. My understanding is that the motor is the same as in a 2510 tractor. Deere did have a lovable tendency to use the same motor in a lot of machines (seems like they put the 404 in just about everything). I recently saw a 2510 on Ebay that the seller claimed was a '68 (or thereabouts) which would mean that they made it while they were making the 20 series. No real help on bolting it in a 2010C, just thought I'd pass it on.
2510 has the next generator 300-series engine and has nothing to do with the 2010 engine. A 2510 tractor is just a 3020 with a 2020 or 450 crawler engine stuck into it by Deere. Deere used many engines in the older combines, including Hercules, the HA165 (2010 engines) and the 300 series like used in 2510s, 2020s, 450 crawlers, etc.Lowly wrote:I don't have any idea how it compares to a crawler, but I have 2 45 Combines, one that I use and one for parts. Thank you for the additional information- so it sounds like I really need to determine that this combine has a HA165 diesel engine to be a swap for my 2010 diesel crawler. In fact, I think that at least the head on my current 2010 engine has been swapped because it is ag green.
Does anyone know how many different types of diesel engines were used in the 45 combine? Is the HA165 the only 4-cylinder diesel- are the other diesels either 2 cylinder or 3-cylinder? I'm guessing the 300 series is 4-cylinder if used in 450 crawlers.
Thanks again for the help.

My 45's have M 51HA type engines, both gas. I've seen 45's refered to as square back or round back, I assume that just refers to the shape of the tin work in the rear. Mine are both square backs, guessing that makes them later models.
I'm sure that is no help with your question either, but maybe I'll learn where else my motors are apt to turn up!

I did find this good link about older JD combines that does have some useful information:

Now I at least know the apx. age of my "new" combine. My dad bought my "old" one new so I know that's a 52. A Dearborn-Wood Bros. pull type with a Ford flathead 4 cyl. engine. I've been told it's an 8N motor carrying on as a power plant. The funny thing about that motor is that is was always a mean starter the first time every year. But finally the ring gear stripped and my dad welded up a crank for it, and with no starter draw it started like a dream- 3 or 4 easy cranks and then one brisk one and away it would go!
Just goes to show, progress isn't always forward!

I posted this yesterday, but it disappeared. I hope I didn't violate some protocol here. Some of my somewhat unedited combine notes. 45s came with Hercules gas engines, a 2010 type gas engine, and two 2010 type diesels, as well as a next-generation 300 series engine.Tigerhaze wrote: Does anyone know how many different types of diesel engines were used in the 45 combine? I forgot to mention that Deere made one diesel combine engine with the 1010 and 2010 format with no sleeves. 155 cubic inches.
Also, here are some more serial # specs for 2010 type engines.

John-
Thanks yet again for the great information- that was exactly what I needed.
I was very interested in this because I have found that sometimes these can be picked up very cheaply at these auctions- seems I could possibly get the combine for the engine and then part out the rest of the combine. I really won't know until I can find out the condition of the combine- sometimes they are junk except for the engine or vice-versa.

FYI- found out the JD45 combine in this auction is an early 70's gasser model so won't help me much. Still I appreciate all the information posted about them for future reference.
