1010 Glow plug health
Is the health of a glow plug a yes or no question? In other words, its either good (has resistance) or no good (no resistance)? If not, how do i tell if a glow plug is going bad? Is there some Ohm range that is ideal?

Re: 1010 Glow plug health
PTC (positive temperature coefficient) glow plugs can do some strange intermittent things - but not the plugs used in 1010s and 2010s. In 99 9/10% of the cases, they either work - or they don't - with no inbetween.ptrachte wrote:Is the health of a glow plug a yes or no question? That being said - I'd never trust an ohm meter to check any type of glow plug. Too many false readings that way. Testing resistance is NOT testing under load. Just energize and see if it draws current. If it draws current it works, it if doesn't - it doesn't work. Just don't energize very long or you'll blow it up.
I've been studying this again. If you do a search of this site by entering "glow" in the search window, you'll find an excellent discussion by some of our "stars" (in my opinion) from May of this year.

Mr. Demaris does not know it but I've elected him one of our stars. In this post, he talks about glow plugs made by Wellman:
"Those glow-plugs are made by the British company Wellman - that usually goes by the name W.A.P. Dealer's cost for those plugs is $15 each if bought 100 at a time. The ones for the 1010 and 2010s that are cheaper are made by May Co. in China - and I think that's what Deere is selling now.
One note. The OEM plugs were single-coil and very easy to burn out. The new Wellman plugs are dual-coil /self-regulating - and in theory - they are almost burn out proof. I say "almost" because I've still seen a few blow. Mostly in military diesels with bypassed plug-timers.
If you ever need to check plugs while installed - use an amp meter and check each one quickly for amp-draw. Burned out plugs draw zero."
He goes on to talk in detail about how and why they need to be draw tested with an amp meter in line. Then he says, "The early serial # (1010's) plugs that take a 5/8" wrench are Wellman #6A467G011."
My reason for writing all this is that I emailed a place in New Jersey last night called The Parts Network who sells Wellman. They called me first thing today. I talked to a very nice guy who told me they don't have that number in stock and Wellman does not have it on the production schedule. "Call back in January."
What do you all think?

Hi Rob-
I was involved in that post, and I ended up purchasing four new glow plugs from Lavoy. He carries the Wellmans and is very competitive.

I wrote yesterday morning, the minute I saw Tigerhaze' post. I returned one of your admin@jdcrawlers.com emails that you sent me a while ago.
I have two 1010's. I'd probably want two sets. I don't want to clutter the postings with this if you want to email me robkinnaird@sbcglobal.net.
