350C Track Master Pin

Post by DCB Farmer » Wed Feb 20, 2013 11:00 am

Is it possible to drive out the master pin with a gear puller? I don't have access to a hydraulic pin press like the service manual shows and I am not a good aim with a sledge hammer using the hand tool from the manual. I have a few different size gear pullers and got to wondering if it would work, or if anyone has already done it.

Thanks

don't no if its the same as my 350, I used a large drift pin and sledge hammer to knock it out with , it did take a few shoots but it did come out also i soaked the pin down for a few days with oil.

Hi: I've had good luck clamping a 2x4 or 4x4 with a hole drilled in it over the master pin to hold the drift. This allowed me a good swing and no hands in the way. Some have welded a handle on the drift to keep it from bouncing out between whacks.
I position the master link over the sprocket for better support to get things moving a bit, then re position over the front idler for the actual splitting.

Good luck. Paul

i always split on the sprocket (right side) at about 10oclock makes it much easier to hook back up

I tried using a cheap large gear puller on a master pin once just to see what it would do and it wouldn't budge and broke one of the puller arms. A quality puller may not break but I am guessing that it may not budge it either. I also tried a c-shaped ball joint remover and had similar results.

There are options for portable master pin presses that don't involve a sledgehammer but are not cheap:
