I hate it when this happens to my 420c
Just finished getting it back together last January. Looks like back to the drawing board.

Hi,
Ouch! I gotta admit, that I hate that, too!
The only good thing I can think of, is that these things are mostly metal, as opposed to modern equipment that's full of plastics.....
Did the thing burn much longer than the point where the pix was taken?

This has always been my greatest fear when I see a crawler with no battery hold down. I don't mean that it was the cause here, but on crawlers I have seen and purchased that did not have the hold down. If you look some time, see how close the battery post is to the bottom of the gas tank. I could just see myself taking a big bump over a rock or something and having the battery jump up and short out against the bottom of the gas tank.

The fire makes the damage look worse than it is I will be ordering the hood, radiator, hoses, wire harness, seat, etc. to put it back together as I feel it is worth it. Lavoy you are absolutely right as to what happened to it. We let the loggers "borrow" it to get down into the frozen swamp. They must have left the switch on which killed the battery. They removed the battery and lost one of the hold down J bolts in the snow so they bungee corded the battery on. Shame on me for not paying attention to detail. How cheap that bolt looks now! I will be looking for at least the parts mentioned above. would like hood to be in real good shape (new or used).

Hate to see that happen. I'm sure you'll be able to get it up and going before too long though. Neighbor was burning trash and lost his gas cap one day. He got off the crawler and was tending the burn pile when all of a sudden the vapors must have caught from the fire. He had the lil MC up and going again in no time though.
Also know where there is 420 sitting in the mountains all burned up. It's been sitting quite some time though and I'm pretty sure at this point it's just a parts tractor.

Hi,
Yep. I kinda figured it was the old battery post welded to the gas tank trick at work.
My 420c hasn't had the bolt hold down for 30 years, *but* it has had a piece of wood that is cut to follow both angles under the tank. When this is wiggled into position, it holds the battery down as well as provides an electrical insulator.
Dad never liked the original Deere method, so he devised this one. I offer it as an option because I do like having an insulator incorporated.

One thing I have done in a pinch is to paint the bottom of the tank with spray on bedliner material. Now that I have the hold downs, I would probably not do this anymore, but I do have some nifty little rubber covers that I found at an automotive supply store that cover the battery posts and ends.

How soon will you be needing it? I've got a 420C but I've been waiting for rain and cooler weather to get a couple of fence lines cleared. I need the rain to soften the ground around here. I need the cooler weather because it's been dang HOT here this Summer (and Fall). I probably won't be selling until at least November/December.
