non john deere
This has nothing to do with John Deere, but I'm trying to hit all possible sources of information.
Have ton and a half military truck cut down to make a log skidder, sometime I'll try to post photos, if you like old iron you'll love this. Anyhow for a motor it has a Chevy 245 straight six. It now has a cracked block. Anybody know where I can find one? I live in NW PA, hoping to find something close by. I don't do ebay, to many rip offs.
Not reaally familar with GM motors but think a 295 might bolt right up.
Thanks for any help out there

Hi Terry;
Most of the older 6cyl chevy are inter changable. Just check the bolt pattern on the bell housing and sometimes you may have to change the flywheel. It's been a long time since I played with the old ones.

Engine
Terry, I have a engine in the original can the military stored them in, that came out of a ton and a half truck. At least i think it is, not sure how they rate the trucks. I have the truck it came out of too, so if you need some info off either fire away. I'm sure they could be bought fairly resonable. Steven

It is a 235, that was a typo. Designation I think is G506, at one time I had determined it was a 1946 tho can't remember why now, I'll check some casting numbers again.
I'd hate to use an original motor still in the can for this, that's something a collecter should be useing. My reading tells me the 235 was made up till 1962 and any year will bolt up so should not be hard to find.
Lavoy said they were common in his area,if he could steer me to some salvage yards that would be helpful. I know I was looking for something local, but years ago I work for the Bureau of Reclamation in Bismark, we did feild work around Oakes, up to New Rockford and Devils Lake. Would be nice to have an excuse to take a trip out that way, I'd like to see that country again.
Thanks for the information everybody, didn't expect that much of a response. I'll be picking your brains on this again.

Terry,
I would think a 235 should be pretty common. There are 4 or 5 of them listed on eBay right now and it was a pretty common engine to 1950s era Chevys like the Belair. I found a few rebuilders that had short and long blocks as well if you're not into the whole engine rebuilding thing like some of us whackos. Post some pictures when you get a chance.

I have the GMC engine or should I say the complete truck.1944 CCKW353 The engine will bolt up but it is about 3 inches longer. If you look at the frame you will notice 2 extra holes just ahead of the motor mount. The frames of those trucks will accept any of those engines. So it shouldn't be hard to find an engine. I'm located on Long Island Ny if your interested. I just don't want to cut the truck up for scrap.

Bill, thanks for the website, got a lot of good info and leads off it. I figure any motor I get I'll do a total rebuild on, can't have it breaking down again, and I want to be sure of the job.
Thanks Charles for the lead but I'm looking for just the motor. Right now I have 8 big trucks, 2 running,3 obselete,3 for parts. 3 pickups, 2 jeeps, 2 equipemnt trailers, a dozer a backhoe, forklift, sawmill, 2 tractors and asorted farm equipment. I'm not sure but I got a feeling the wife just might snap if I drag anything else big home, sometimes women just don't understand.

Lavoy Just saw your post, we must have been posting at the same time. Yes I'm looking for one I can rebuild. I plan to work on it over the summer, I only log in the winter and I have the 1010 to finish up this season with, so while I do need to get a motor it doesn't have to be right away. Why don't you Pm me with the details.

I guess I would have to look more closely at it, but my guess would be excellent as far as that part of it. Our stuff really does not rust up here for the most part. We still have Grandpas 41 Chevy pickup, and it never had rust in any spot other than light surface rust. The truck is not at my place, it is at the farm 50 miles away so not easy to check right now. The box is junk, right now is full of 51 chevy cab and parts, but the truck was most likely backed in to where it sits under it's own power. I remember hauling grain with it when I was little, so I know it ran and drove. You guys need to come up and we'll part it out some weekend.

Charles, could you get the numbers off your engine block, I want to try and cross reference, mkae sure it will work. That should be 270, which was a more rugged motor that the 235, better able to take the the high rpms. Anyhow let me know and we can go from there. Do you know when it ran last?
