1010C Gas, Engine timing/ carb leak
Can anyone tell me the best way to time the engine also the carb was leaking fuel through the air intake port so we purchased a kit, we installed a new needle and seat checked the float for leaks reinstalled it and adjusted it according to the info that came with the kit, we still have the same problem. any thoughts?
Timing is pretty straight-forward. At cranking speed it fires at TDC, and at high speed of 2500 RPM it fires at 26 degrees BTDC. Use a timing light and check the marks on the flywheel via the inpspection hole. This is the same regardless if you have a Prestolite, Wico, or Delco distributor.
As far as the gas leak goes - there's not much to it. The fuel flow is shut off by the needle and seat valve if done correctly. If your's is still leaking - either the fuel is leaking past the valve when closed, or the float is not working correctly. If you've got a metal-tipped needle, it more apt to have a slow leak than if you've got a rubber or Viton tip. You've just got to double-check your work. That is . . . unless you're over-choking and flooding it -and that's something totally different.
