420c undercarraige

Post by Johnneypopper » Thu Mar 06, 2008 9:27 pm

Hey all just bought my first crawler a420c a 57 i believe. It was pretty nice out the day i brought it home so i played around a bit but turned cold again so haven't done much.Totally new to the crawler world so have lots of questions.First of all the rails are wore out badly along with the sprockets so wondering if any of you out there would happen to know if i could get a good used or rebuilt set of rails and sprockets - what would they be worth? It has 2 bolt pads. I'm in east central Saskatchewan, Canada very few crawlers around here and no parts.Wondering if anybody can steer me in the right direction. It needs work but engine and power train are good.Glad i found this site as it will sure help me.Any help welcome.

Hey john i'm in edmonton, Lavoy seems to be the closest to us for parts, plus the best prices i've seen. I'm looking for 4 bolt pads, the flatter the better. I have some 2 bolt pads but they are pretty rough. The undercarriage i have from my parts crawler is pretty bad as well. I was thinking of welding up my sprockets, two of em have field repairs.

Have a good one

I have new and used sprockets on hand, rails might be a little tougher, but I think I can still build one or two sets of 420 rails.

thanks for the input guys actually had plans of comming down Lavoys way later this spring. Ill try and get in touch with you figure something out that crawler has solid front idlers 19inch diameter I assume from a bigger crawler are they interchangable or could it be a different track frame it is a five roller bottom rollers have lots of flange whats the best way to tell if they are done for getting a heavy snow fall now might go out and pile some snow. Once i figure this out ill bend your ear for the other stuff

Berco made disc idlers for the 420, I have a set ratholed that are going on my 420 if I ever get to do it. If the flanges are good, look at the thickness of the roller where the rails run on it, it may be getting thin there.

What exactly is worn on the rails, where the springs slide for the front idler? If Thats the case, I just welded mine up, along with the bracket that that slides on the rail.

Not sure I understand the question The rails pins and bushings are wore so that they dont ride on the sprocket properly and im out of tightener Does it make sense to cut out a link and snug them up and run them till there dead Icant hurt anything can I Is there any hope of removing the flange on top of the exhaust manifold looks like pipe fits inside the manifold and i cant move it it needs a little repair

If the rails themselves are good, then they can be rebushed. Removing a link is a band aid fix for a more serious problem, and will lead to more problems.
Best way to get the exhaust pipe out is to heat it up with a torch and work it out slowly.
