JD450 - Getting the clutch assembly out

Post by JSVice » Mon Apr 21, 2008 11:20 pm

So, I got the hydraulic tank, battery box, and fuel tank off. I'm trying to get the clutch pack out, and I'm stymied.

I removed the 7 bolts from the top of the housing, but it won't budge, and I don't know what else to take out. Ideas? Am I missing a bolt? I get the feeling that I am.
Thanks,
John

Your going in the right direction-- you can remove that cover in the middle of the pic.--be sure all bolts are out of houseing cover--there are two dowels holding it there--it may take a little tunk with a mall to get it to start--it should be sealed with jd plastic gasket--once it breaks loose pry it up a little at a time off dowels--there is a spring hooked to under side of cover which can be unhooked after it is up off dowels an slid to one side--also that track your manual is laying on will have to be taken apart and sprocket removed have fun Randy

Once top cover is off and sprocket removed, you'll have to pull the pinion from the final and then the center shaft. I usually do this last as the 2 shafts are the only thing that supports the clutch assy. So have a chainfall or something carrying the weight before you pull the pinion.

Thanks for the help guys. I had removed all the right bolts, I just wasn't anticipating how tightly the plate was stuck on those dowels. The spring was a minor annoyance, but so far, it hasn't been that tough. It only gets worse from here though. I'm planning on jacking it up tomorrow and taking the track off the left (pictured) side. For the fellow who requested pics, I'll try and take another one as soon as I have something interesting (i.e. when I get stuck  )
Thanks,
John

I'm in the middle of the same job. Easy work, just BIG-N-HEAVY! I got a great tip from a fellow crawler lover, Before pulling drum shafts, remove set screw on brake drum and replace with a piece of 3/8" threaded rod, use a couple of washers and a nut. Run the nut down just to take a little weight. Don't screw the rod in too far ,or it will lock shaft in place. You can also take out upper drainplug in steering clutch housing and use a bottle jack with a bolt to hold up the drum. Good luck, Brian
