555 Crawler Loader Problems.

Post by hillbillyreefer » Sun Jun 22, 2008 10:50 am

I did something really not smart to my crawler about 10 years ago. I let a bunch of mud freeze in the tracks and then tried moving it. Something in the
drive snapped and the track went loose. It has been sitting beside my shop since, now I figure I should fix the girl up, she's only got about 800 hours on it. I also have the hoe attachment on the unit.

I went to fire her up the other day, changed the batteries hooked up a set of booster cables and tried turning it over. The starter seems to engage. It makes a hard clunking noise when it engages. The motor does not turn over. I'm afraid the engine is stuck. I removed the either injection port and sprayed a bunch of WD 40 in the intake manifold a couple days ago. If that doesn't help, I think the next step will be to pull a manifold off and spray directly into the cylinders. Anyone got a good penetrating oil to put in the cylinders, I really hope to get her unstuck without tearing the motor down.

Next problem, the tracks have been sitting on the ground for ten years. I assume they are seized up too. When I get her running, I plan to lift it off the ground with the feet on the hoe and the bucket. Clean out the tracks, hose them down with diesel and let them soak for a day or two. After that beat on them with a sledge hammer to see if they will move. If they do then gently put it in gear and see if they will turn.

Next step is to get her into the shop and torn down to fix whatever the original problem was. We'll leave that for another post, one problem at a time.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get things unstuck I could sure use some advice. Advice on my plan of action would also be welcomed.

Long post for a newbie, but the questions are endless.

Thanks Guys
Brad

By spraying in the ether injector line, you're probably not getting the juice into the cylinders as well as if you sprayed right into the cylinders after you remove the injectors.I swear by PB Blaster, great stuff, much better than WD-40.I would first remove the injectors, then try turning it over by hand as I'm thinking you might have water in the cylinders from either condensation or from an open exhaust. If there is water and you're able to spin it over with the injectors installed, you risk ruining the injectors. They might hydro-lock and usually there is no way to fix that.
As for that snap you heard 10 years ago,it was probably your final drive.

Thanks Tuney443.

WD isn't my favorite it's just what I had on hand at the time. I haven't got any PB Blaster, seems to be a favorite on here, next time I'm in town I'll pick some up.

The injectors will come out tomorrow. Then we will have a bit better idea what we are monkeying with. I'm going to try a bit of Kroil in the cylinders when we get the injectors out.

Those 555s were bad for the final drive problems they would take out a bearring then with the added clearance work the teath out of the bull and pinion or just torque out the bull teath in a power dig .I got parts coming for my 555 let me know how it looks when you get into it .Pull the injectors and put lots of Kroil in the injector holes the engine may have a stuck piston .My 555 sat for 8 years and was in decent shape I was impressed .He put a tomato juce can over the exhaust and it would not have made it through another winter .Digitup .

I'll second the Kroil recommendation. IMO, really good stuff. http://www.kanolabs.com/google/

After talking out the injectors blow air down each hole, find one with both valves closed and the piston not bottom out. Find an old injector modifie it to accept a porta power, use this preasure to free it

That would shake it loose !!.Or you could do what the King of Obsolite did with an old starter unit but with the deeres the starter is hard to get at ,

Thanks for all the replys guys. We got a swing handle on the end of the crank today and got about an inch of travel out of the crank. Put some more Kroil in and left it. Will probably be a couple days before we get back to it, then we'll start rocking it back and forth. Hopefully not too much damage has been done.
