Starter Replacement on 2010 Loader (Diesel)

Well, I think I finally fried the starter on my diesel 2010 crawler loader. The previous owner had relocated the battery further away than the stock battery location under the deluxe seat and thus had to use longer cables. He also didn't have very heavy cables either (they appear to be 2 gauge) and would heat up during starting. The starter looks like it has been on a long while as well. I have been dreading this moment because it is a real pain to work around the loader arm.

Anyhow I couldn't find my service manual but was looking at the starter and had the following questions:

1) Are there only 2 nuts holding the starter in ( I see two that are accessible) or is there a third tucked in between the starter and engine block?

2) Are there multiple models of starters for the diesel? I think there were the last time I looked but am not sure.

3) Will I need to remove the diesel fuel filters to remove the starter? (don't know how long the starter shaft is and the gear on the end).

4) What gauge cables should be used for the primary and ground cables to the battery?

hello,

1-yes there is only two nuts on 2010s.

2-yes there is two that i know of, delco and prestolite.

3-if u have the earlier model with the two fuel filters i am pretty sure u will have to, as the only spot for the starter to come up out is near the front of the motor.

4- not sure about cables

I used 2/0 welding cable to replace my cables and they work just fine.
If I remember correctly the starters on both of my 2010's are 42MT.
These starters are easy to rebuild and the parts are not priced bad either.

Thank you both- I plan on pulling over the weekend and seeing what I have for a starter- it's covered in decades of grime right now! It looks like I will have to remove the fuel filter bracket and probably the filters themselves (probably a good time to change out anyhow)- I just didn't want to go through hassle of bleeding on reassembly.

I will also be planning on replacing with largest cables I can find- I had thought 2/0 is what I had heard in the past and will go with that.

There are two different starters, one exceedingly expensive, the other not as bad. I think it is the prestolite that is ungodly pricey. I know a couple of years ago, I had a customer in Australia that had a Prestolite. I know it took some digging, but I was able to find a cheaper replacement for it from another manufacturer. Unfortunately I did not write down the number, but I think I can get another one if need be.

I didn't get to it this weekend and it may be a little bit before I can pull it- it is so grimed up that i can't tell anyhting by just looking at it. I'll let you know when I pull it which one I have.

Update:

I finally had to change out starters yesterday, as it failed right when I was trying to unload a parts crawler. Luckily the parts crawler had a freshly remanufactured starter.

One thing I did learn is that you don't have to actually open up the diesel system (take off fuel filters)- you do have to move the filters but they are mounted on a bracket with two bolts. The lines on the filter system are flexible so I could move it out of the way to pull out the starter without opening the fuel system.

One other thing- those diesel starters are HEAVY!

A parts manual I happened to get in a deal with both 440 manuals shows Delco Remy 1107523, 1107556, and 1107573 for a diesel 2010 and Prestolite MFX-8001A if this helps any.
My local co-op gin makes battery cables out of 1/0 and 2/0 welding wire. For something like this I do not believe there is too large as long as the wire will bend where you need it.
By the way is PC-728-(1-65) the latest version for a 2010C parts manual?
