From the I&T shop manual JD-18 (for the 435D and 440ID [same engine]) "Beginning at the center and working toward ends of the cylinder head, torque hold-down cap screws to 170-180 Ft.-Lbs. in 1/2 turn increments." HTH

440 ICD torque numbers

Post by JD440ICD2006 » Fri Nov 28, 2008 6:43 pm

I know of three manuals that have this info. The I & T that is mentioned above, the Detroit Diesel manual for the 53 series, and I think there is a JD version for the same engines (435, 440 ID, 440 ICD).
If you are rebuilding one (sounds like it), you may want one of those books as there are a number of torque values to have handy when putting her back together.
1959 JD 440ICD w/64 Power Angle Tilt Blade
1959 JD 440ICD w/63 Manual Angle Blade
1959 JD 440IC w/602 Manual Angle Blade
1959 JD 730D W SE (many options)
1950 JD M S w/M-20 Mower
1952 JD M W
1955 FORD 640 (burns the most fuel)

watch out wen dipping the bolts, once in a thousand on a snowmobile head the bolt went so deep that the extra oil in bottom of hole split the jug in me , so now i dip then set them down on rag, sometimes i learn fast wen it costs me money. lol
