Two cylinder 1010 diesel engine

Post by jdemaris » Fri Jan 30, 2009 8:58 am

I'm trying to get more info on these Deere engines used in Europe. I've come across a few small Deere crawlers in France like look like MC or 40s style with small two cylinder diesel engines. I then found out that Deere took Dubuque 1010 diesel engines, and and basically cut them in half for use in some Model 100 Deere-Lanz tractors in Europe. Seems these engine are direct bolt-in fit into older Deere crawlers and have the Dubuque bolt pattern. 1010 engines in two cylinder and four cylinder are also rubber mounted in Europe. I read about one guy rebuilding his two cylinder diesel and had to order a standard four-cylinder 1010 gasket and cut it in half to use.

I don't think that is a 1010 cut in half, the intake is through the exhaust, there is a boss on the back of the block that is not on the 1010 blocks. The water outlet comes out the front of the head, instead of throug the valve cover. There are a few other differences I notice that would leave me to believe that this is someone elses engine, or not a Deere engine. They used a Perkins 3 cylinder in the 440, does Perkins have a 2 cylinder?

I don't know of a two cylinder Perkins, but I'm no authority, especially with European engines. I know that Deere used Perkins and also Standard-Truimph diesel engines in several tractors overseas.

On this two cylinder engine - the guy working on it is familiar with the four cylinder 1010 Dubuque engines. He says this two-cylinder is exactly the same bore and stroke as the four cylinder and the Deere 1010 head gasket fits perfect when cut in half. I know at least when you compare a later Deere three cylinder 152 (like from a 350) and compare it to the Perkins three cylinder 152, they are completey different and the bore and strokes don't match.

I found some more info and I'm still confused. I'd like to know more.
Here is the Deere spec sheet for the Deere-Lanz model 100 tractor with that two-cylinder engine. It is indeed exactly the same bore and stroke as a 1010 diesel. It is 92 mm X 88.9 mm (3 5/8" X 3 1/2"). Size is 1183 ccs which is 72 cubic inches - exactly half of the 1010 diesel 144 cubic inches. Deere calls the engine model 204. Now, Perkins used to have a model 204P diesel, but it was a four cylinder 50 horse engine. Also, Perkins does make one two-cylinder engine - it's a model 400 and comes in several sizes. None come close to matching the Deere large bore and stroke used in 1010s. All the Perkins have longer strokes then bores, and all the Deere 1010s and 2010s have shorter strokes than bores - including whatever this two cylinder is. Here's the Deere spec sheet for the model 100 tractor, and also side by side photos of the Deere # 204 two cylinder next to the Perkins #400 two cylinder
