Paint

Post by CAR » Mon Jan 19, 2009 1:19 pm

I am beginning the paint phase on some of my parts to my 440 loader.
Can anyone tell me if the Tractor Restoration paint that is sold at
Tractor Supply is the same color as the JD Industrial yellow?

Also, can anyone tell me if there is a trick to removing the cylinder sleeves on a 2-53?
Thanks Craig

It may be the same color as modern Deere yellow, but I don't think that it will be the same as vintage yellow. There have been posts on other boards about some of the Fleet Farm, TSC, or other paints from those type sources chalking or fading in a relatively short time frame.

Craig,
No, the tractor supply paint is the modern color. The early industrial yellow has more orange in it. Just go to mother Deere and get it. They call it "Old Construction Yellow Paint" It is the correct color for pre Nov 1 1992 equipment. the # for the spray can is TY25679 and the Gallon is TY24354. If I remember correctly the gallon was somewhere around $50.
Hope this helps.

Thanks,
You guys convinced me. It's off to the Deere store.

Any thoughts on removing cylinder sleeves? Big hammer and block of wood?

If you can, I would make a driver from a piece of aluminum stock. Machine a shoulder on it, so it sits in the bore with the shoulder on the bottom of the sleeve. I have gotten other sleeves to move with a block of wood too.

Thanks,
I was just kidding about the big hammer, I actually thought I may have to get them pressed out.

Has anyone ever used the Old Construction Yellow from Deere? I bought some spray cans and not only were they expensive as hell, the paint would run off if you didn't spend 2 weeks applying 29 dust coats, and when it was actually on there it would just chip off when it got bumped with something.

I gave up on it and took a clutch housing cover (with the new paint) to get real oil paint mixed up in that color. Actually, they screwed it up 2 times and I ended up adjusting the color myself, but damn is it awesome paint.

Do I have the right color? (Instrument panel, top of transmission and seat frame are from JD spray can and clutch and final drive housings are oil paint)

Looks like you are coming along fine and have a nice crawler to work with. To my eye, your new paint looks a little more orange than the John Deere color but with the difference variations in color balance in digital photographs and computer monitors it is hard to know.

I am not a restoration perfectionist since I use my crawlers and they are lucky to get paint at all. I have started to use Tractor Supply's "Transport Yellow”. It is cheap and so am I. I would send you $10 for the paint if you would run an experiment for me. If you have a Tractor Supply handy, would you buy a spray can of Transport Yellow and try it on a surface near the correct John Deere paint and take a picture?

Most all of the JD440's I have had were repainted at some point. When I chipped off the repaint, the Transport Yellow seemed to be a pretty close match. With fading and aging it is hard to tell.

Ray,
It looks like you have the color about right. The old deer yellow I have gotten is quite orange. And YES the rattle cans "RUNS LIKE A DEERE" if you try to get too much coverage in a pass!

I thought it was pretty close but a bit on the orange side also. I had bought a small can of yellow to tone it down a little but didn't mix any in yet.

I'll try to remember the Transport Yellow next time I'm at Tractor Supply.
