Value of 1010 parts and wife
Value of 1010 parts and wife
I'm going to try to avoid writing a novel about my fascinating life here in Connecticut. Having discovered last week in a previous post that I need a pair of trackframes, I called my old "friend" who takes 1010's and all kinds of other stuff apart on his property. He's got one complete 1010 left for parts. He wants the tracks and some rollers off it. He says it has new clutches in freshly rebuilt finals and a good transmission. Mine could use finals and has a bearing squawk in the transmission. Then he says, "I got guys after me for the finals.." blah, blah, blah. "What are you willing to pay?"
I tell him it sounds like he wants me to bid on what I want. He says in the friendliest way imaginable, "No! no! I just have these other guys..." blah blah blah and tells the same story over again. You all get the picture. You all have heard it before.
We all know a machine is worth more apart than together. I need a pair of trackframes, transmission and, if a pair of freshly rebuilt finals happened to be attached, well fine. If I drag another piece of equipment of any description onto our property, I will be writing to a marital therapy website not a machinery therapy website. I can pick up some parts though and hide them in the woods. Heh-heh.
I know I can't hear the tranny on this thing. I can look over the trackframes pretty quickly and I can take the inspection covers off the finals as I remember and see how thick the "new" clutches look.
What are these pieces worth? I don't like getting involved in an unhealthy bidding war with invisible bidders in an auction organized by the salesman. I think the DA calls it extortion.
Think about this in your leisure time and reply. Thanks, Rob

I attend a lot of auctions and have scavenged "boneyards" for equipment parts, and can tell you that worth is dependent on the person you ask.
Unfortunately most of the parts you reference aren't available new anymore so your comparison would be to other used parts from a crawler boneyard or ones put up for sale or auction.
Based on my conversations with crawler boneyards for relatively small parts , each of the things you mention would be anywhere from one hundred to several hundred dollars each, if not more. I can't say how much they would be for sure if for sale but my guess would be about the same.
I would probably guess this worth for the parts (assuming good shape or rebuilt in case of finals) and not looking at it from purely scrap value:
$150 x 2 for the trackframes
$350 x 2 for the finals
$400 for the transmission
Total: $1400
Now, being a buddy he should knock it down a bit to an even grand and be good. More if he is a good buddy.
Unfortunately you can't take home the whole thing for scrap value- then you could probably selll the remaining parts and have your parts for free!
It will be interesting to see how off people thing I am about the parts prices. I'm guessing the transmission is worth much more, even used, than what I am guessing.

Rob,
Not sure how you put a price on the trany and finals unless you can open them up to see inside but I do know that I wouldn't give anything for the wife as I already have one and want to get rid of the one I have.

Re: Value of 1010 parts and wife
Yes, and that's kind of sad. I hate seeing these old machines butchered. The added problem is . . . they are only worth more in parts when you have a way to sell those parts. Before Ebay, most sensible people realized that a private individual doesn't have great exposure to market a bunch of obsure parts. So, you could wind up only selling a few of the most poplular components, and then be stuck with a pile of junk that can never be fixed. Before Ebay, you didn't see too many individuals taking apart good machines, just to part them out. That only seemed to work for established tractor guys who had a name out there to be found when someone needed a part. Now - with the Internet, Ebay, Craigslist, etc. seems people all over the place are buying good running machines and scrapping them out. One results seems that to be that good buys on old tractors are getting more scrace due to that parts value.robk wrote:We all know a machine is worth more apart than together.
In regard to used parts prices now - the guy near me has a big salvage yard for farm tractors, backhoes, and crawlers. He does a lot of business. Even has European stuff. Track frames for a 1010 or 350 are $300 each. Complete final drives are $500. Front idler is $150.
My opinion is - if you own a machine and plan on keeping it, don't ever pass up a chance to buy a complete parts machine if you can get it cheap.
Thanks for the input guys. I look forward to more. Please reply.
JD? I've read about everything you've written on JD's here and on Yesterday's Tractors. You are a great knowledge base as they say now-a-days. I hope you have a wife and kids who will put all your writing together in a book if you can't get around to it. I'd call it "The Enthusiasts Guide to Tractors and Philosophy - JD Tells All". Many, many thanks; it's been a gift to all of us certainly.

I bought a 2010 parts crawler, identical to my 2010 loader except for lack of backhoe brackets, and lots of new or replaced parts for $1800. I agree with Jdemaris that if you can geta complete parts crawler, do it. My only problem is getting it delivered
I was a little low on my parts price guesses, but proportional

That's the problem for me too. Getting five or six tons of "non operational iron" delivered is not cheap. And once you have a track machine in your yard "with a flat tire" as I like to say... well... it is WHERE it is. It ain't movin! All my stuff moves and still my poor wife who's from Mississippi occasionally wanders out back, hands on hips, and says, "It looks like West Virginia back here!" It is all perfectly good stuff... which I'll get to someday... she's just waay outa line.

This is really getting out of hand but she is actually pretty cute.. I mean look at me. How much can someone who looks like a mix of Soupy Sales, Letterman, Prince Charles and Alfred E. Neuman expect? Lavoy, this is inappropriate content and should be deleted.
