440 Steering clutch

Post by CAR » Mon Mar 16, 2009 7:04 am

Hello all, I need a little help on the following questions.

I'm putting the steering clutch assembly back together in the clutch housing.
The manual is vague on the issue of the throw-out bearing sleeve.
Are you supposed to press the sleeve into the differential?

Also can anyone tell me if the bearing that holds the shifter in is a true bearing of some type or just a cup with a snap ring?

And what does the spring attach to after you slide it over the shifter rod?
Again the manual is vague on this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, the sleeve drives into the carrier bearing quill, there is a dimension somewhere in the service manual.
The shifter "bearing" is just a small cup, correct.
The spring hooks to the side of the shifter cover, you will see two slots cut into the side.

Thanks Lavoy,

I found that dimension, it was in the spec. part of the manual. I just didn't read far enough.

So you wrap the spring around the shifter and attach one end to one side of the cover and the other end to the other side of the cover, right!
That way the shifter finds neutral when not in gear.

Craig,
Nope, spring hooks both ends on the same side. It is supposed to hold the shift lever against the tab on the shifter cover.

Lavoy,
Thanks, I see how that spring works now.
