Post by puttputt » Tue Mar 17, 2009 9:18 pm

I was bored tonite so decided to replace the chain link I broke this summer...Well that job went well untill I grabed the sproket and it moved..... Up and down,Hmmm..bad bearing..Can I change the bearings on that shaft without removing the final drive??? It looks like I might be able to..No I do not have a manual, The Deere dealer wants over 500 bucks for one..So everything Ive learned about this machine has come from this site, Thanks Guys ...

No you can not change the bearing with out removing the final. You will need the manual for this job! This is not a small job. I paid somewhere in the $25 range I believe a few years ago. A parts manual is also a must in my opinion, but thtas just my two cents worth. Mark

If you are talking about the axle bearing, you can probably do it with the final on, but it will be a royal pain. Plus, if the axle bearings are bad, it is likely that the pinion bearings are as well. I guess I would pull the final, gut it, and have the case cleaned out, then put in new bearings and seals.
I have parts manuals, but no service manuals for the 1010.

Deere is the only correct axle seal.

you do have a pretty involved job ahead of you, your at the right website for help along the way and Lavoy will be able to set you up with parts as well.
the bright side to this is hopefully you have found the bad bearing before gear damage has begun.

PP,
That is a special seal that has seal lips that go both dirrections. You also need to use a special seal instalation tool to get it on the shaft correctly that you can get from a couple of members here. I think WWATSON is one , cant remember who else has made them. Do a search here on seal tool and you will get to some goo info. The tool is shown in the service manual and also how to use it.

Correct, Deere makes the only correct seal. There is no aftermarket equivalent, and it is also a proprietary seal so that the aftermarket can not source it, tried it a few times, no go.
Charles is also correct, that seal can not be intstalled properly without the seal tool. There are a couple guys on here that are or can make the tool, so that is no longer a problem.
