help: i need a fuel pump and water pump for my 440 icd

Post by frozendozer » Fri Apr 17, 2009 4:47 pm

hello all, i just rebuilt the clutches and final drives in my jd 440 icd but now would like to replace the water pump and fuel pump. I have not been able to locate a dealership that can supply me with these parts.

the engine is a 2-53 GMC jimmy motor.

can anyone help me with this?

Well it sorta depends on what part of the country you are in. In the area from Wyoming to Lousiana the main Detroit Diesel supplier is Stewart and Stevenson. their web site is http://www.ssss.com/. I have gotten a few gaskets for my 2-53 from them.

Thanks for the link, i will give them a call Monday. In the mean time I removed the fuel pump and seen that one of the gears had scored the face plate. It was the gear that is driven by the blower gear. I will take the part in to a machine shop and see if they can machine it flat . I noticed that the pressure relief valve was stuck, and was able to work it free, so it could move again.

After i dislodged the pressure relief valve, the pump went back on, hook up the jumper cables and spin the started. A squirt of ether and the motor belched black smoke. After a couple of tries, the motor would almost keep running. i figure its not getting enough fuel, or the fuel isn"t at the right pressure, or both.

I figure the scoring is the cause of low pressure and volume, I hope with the surface machines flat that it can get within normal operation.

I live in a very remote part of canada with local parts stores or suppliers almost impossible to find, I used to ordering and waiting so that's no problem with me. Any contacts i can get would be greatly appreciated.

Now I was thinking, could a person hook up an electric pump that has 50psi and make that work?

Does any one know where i can get a small 12v electric pump that can pressure that much?

thanks all

Fuel injected cars and trucks get up into that kind of pressures with intank pumps, but they rely on the fuel in the tank to keep the pump cooled. Possibly something like the add on lift pumps used on the 24v Cummins's??
