1955 40c will not move

we just bought a 1955 40 c that the motor was stuck and cracked when we pulled the old motor the input shaft came out with it and i put the input shaft back in the coupler and we installed the new motor i just got it running and tried put it in gear to drive it and it would not move forward or backwards and with it running if you shift gears it does not grind or any thing looking for help or ideas this is the first jd crawler we have jd tractors and oliver crawlers and tractors thanks for any help or information Russ

Russ,
If you are positive that the input shaft is properly connected then
put the shifter in neutral and remove the top cover of the trans.
With the ignition off engage the starter and see if the trans input shaft turns.If it does you could have a bad ring or pinion gear.Removal of
the rear cover will confirm this.JimAnderson

we pulled the motor back out and checked to make sure the input shaft was in the coupler we made sure it was in when we put the motor back in and started it up and we had the same results tomorrow i will pull the shifter plate off and see if anything moves in side tuns and try to see if the sifter is not going in to gear will post back thanks

i pulled the shifter cover off and started it no gears would move when i lifted up on the left pedal the gears started to move so i noticed the right pedal was hitting the floor board i pulled the floor board off and the gears turned and i could get the crawler to move but the left steering is not free it will not turn to the left any ideas on how to get free to start working i started spraying pb blaster on the pressure plate fingers to help what kind of oil do you use

Most likely you are going to have to pull the final drive and take the clutch apart.
It sounds like you don't have enough free play in the engine clutch either.
