this is throwing me for a loop,
a 440ic ,serial # is 4405xx so that designates it to be a 1958,right? ok,
it has a reverser,
it has a 5 speed trans,
has a pto lever but no pto shaft,
the carb intake is a long flextube going back to a oilbath mounted on the rops.
it has a throttle lever in the center of the dash,a push-pull, does not swing.
, it has an 87"wide blade with 4 hyd, cyl's, but is not a PAT (?)this might be a fubar'd PAT,
the inside-armed dozerblade has low mounted lift cyl's. not up along side the motor but down at frame level ,,, rear of cyl's is at frame, front eye of cyl's. is on dozer arm., there is no big v-shaped mounting point like most i've seen.
has the steel plackard nameplate on the hood with painted black background.
so what the heck is this dog of weird
to top it off, owner thinks its a 1963
,,, i'm boondoggled,,, i need more helpful clues. is there another place on the crawler that has the serial # besides the flywheel housing left side?
help me identify a 440ic

Well, it surely cannot be a 1963 as the last 440s were built in 1960.
What you may have is one that has been "part swaped" along the way.
The center throttle is from a 1960.
I saw a 440ICD with the early 5 speed. It likely did not shipo that way, was likely a 440IC and someone decided they wanted a "Jimmy"
in it.
Not sure what had to happen to make that engine fit.
From what i understand, there are anumber of blades other than JD that can mount on these crawlers.

locations of 440ic serial numbers
is there any other place on this crawler that has the serial number?
the lower dash plate with model and serial number is not there,
the leftside flywheel casting flat spot, yes, but any other serial numbers or numbers that were "model specific"? that would be on the main body.

thanks for the tidbit Lavoy,,, this might have recieved the transplant,,, i read somewhere (two cylinder magazine)that the carb intake tube was slightly larger than normal on some of the gas engines to add HP.in an effort to compensate for removing the jimmy engine, ...it looks like this one has that feature but i am only going by what i remember from the old days,,,who can tell me what the stock 440 carb intake diameter is?
