JD 420C Track Project
OK guys here is a politically uncorrect track fix that some of you may like. I posted up some pictures on ytmag.com in the crawler forum under the same title as above. I did all the math and was able to fit rubber tracks to a 5 roller set up. I would post pics here but I am computer challenged and dont have a photobucket account. Is the photo attaching still down here? Anyway, if you guys want I can give all the details. Hint-dont scrap any worn out sprockets-we will need them for this. I hope I dont get flamed for posting over there first. Lavoy, thanks for the thumbs up. Let me know what you guys think-good and bad both.

Here is how this came about. After talking about how expensive re-doing the original tracks were and not being able to drive across pavement I set out to figure how to get rubber tracks on my 420 5 roller. So after a lot of phone calls about rubber track sizes I knew none would work with a totally original setup. One of the companies I work for had a need for a small dozer so I found them a Komatsu D21 locally and went to look at it and then to pick it up. While talking to the guy that sells them we walked into his parts storage to get a roller and it hit me like a brick. He had a stack of weld on Mitsubishi BD2G sprocket outer rings. I measured the OD and decided we found what we needed. I then went out to measure the "rails" on a rubber track to see if it would work with the idler and rollers on the 420. Bingo-we had a match. The OAL of the track was perfect to.
I then called Lavoy to get a set of worn out sprockets because I was going to cut off the teeth just below the bottoms of them. I then got a little cute and had a machinist buddy of mine turn that sprocket to a perfect circle so I could set the heigth on the new Mitsy ring to the same as the original. I guess this is overkill according to the guy we got the rings from but I had the time and a friend in the right job.
We then welded the teeth ring to the stock sprocket circle and proceeded to see if this could all work. Well it did except we couldnt use the rockguards anymore because they rubbed on the track. Mind you my guards are hardly worn so if yours are worn up past the wear strip they may work.
The track itself came from a Mitsy BD2G. You can also use a Komatsu D20 or D21 sized track also. The tracks fit both machines.
I am sure I forgot some thing so please ask.

Man that is slick. The info as to what parts were used is of great help.I
think that is something I might try. From the photos it is hard to see the
contact area of the bottom rollers.Could you describe that?Again that
is a neat idea.JimAnderson

Yes, the rubber tracks have metal rails. The nice part is the inside opening of these "rails" is the same as JD's, roughly 2.125-2.25 inches. The outside to outside of these rails is a little narrower than Deere but that does not mean too much as the rubber track rides on the bottom rollers perfectly. The rubber track also has metal bushings like Deere's although they are not true bushings like we know. They match the weld on sprocket as they should. Yes the tracks were used and I got the pair for 300 plus had to buy the weld on sprocket rings for 150 for the pair. Now I know re-doing the originals would be say 14-1500 so this may not seem like a huge savings but for these older machines it seems like a nice option. Even though the rubber tracks were used they should last a long time unless you use your old deere all day every day. Then if you restore it later your steel tracks wont be ready for the scrap heap. Call me crazy I guess but now I can drive on the driveway and into the barn on the concrete floor also. Easier on the turf too. Also with these light machines there seems to be no effect on traction. Maybe not for everyone but what the heck. Keep asking and I will do my best to answer.

The guy I got the tracks from buys gray market Komatsu and Mitsy's and said most people dont like the rubber tracks so he switches them over. So his buyers get new rails and pads and he has leftover rubber ones.
I will get more pics but how do I post them?
I will shoot the guy an email to see if he has any rubber tracks again. With the economy his turnover may be low and limiting the old rubber ones. The track I put on is the normal pitch and the track on our D21 is the short pitch or half pitch as they call it. Does not matter as both will work.
Like I said earlier guys-dont scrap those old sprockets.

I wonder if that kind of setup could be made to work for the 1010s and early 2010s? Since undercarriage parts (sprockets, rails, pins/bushings) for them is getting scarce, this would be a nice alternative. Unfortunately I have no time to do the necessary measurements.

yea, I was thinking that we couldn't be lucky to have the tracks for a Mitsubishi BD2G or Komatsu D20/D21 be an exact fit for a 1010 or 2010. However I would guess it is possible to find a larger machine like a Komatsu D31 to be a fit.
I did find this supplier on the web- if someone had the time and inclination it seems like they even do specialty rubber tracks.
