440-CI Steering Clutch

Post by crawlercrow » Sun Dec 13, 2009 6:05 pm

Hi guys,I'm new to this site,so don't laugh if you've heard this all before.

I have recently purchased a 440 -c gas crawler and am having problems with the clutch's,it won"t steer one way.I have taken the final drives off bothsides and am replacing the throw-out bearings. The throw-outs had no adjustment left on the carrier. The steel clutch disc"s appear slightly pitted, should these be replaced regardless of how they mic for size? Also, the sleeve that goes through the carrier and quill is flared slightly on the right side and badly on the left. What causes this and how do I fix it? Will replacing the fibre disc"s solve all my steering problems or am I looking at new pressure plates as well? The brake pads are about 50%,should these be done while it's all apart?
Crawlercrow.

Thanks in advance!

PS:Lavoy,I may be in need of parts!

If the throwout bearings are bottomed, you need fibers discs at the least. I would replace pressure plates as well.
If the tube is flared, it has been pulled out of the quills, and jammed up against the side of the clutch drive hub, and they need to be replaced.
Brake bands are kind of up to you. Look at the band at the top, they usually wear the worst there. Make sure you have plenty of room left to the rivets.
I should have all of the parts on hand if you get to that point.

Thanks Lavoy,

I will get a list together soon and order the parts needed.I have printed your price list for parts from the site but don't see complete fibre disc kits for sale.Do you have them or do you have to order individually.I have several crawlers, including 3 40-c's, 1 420-c,and the 440-c so I can steel a few things like the sleeves if they are good.

I will be in touch.

I have complete kits, but that includes brake bands, wasn't sure you were going to need them.
