Stan's JD 420c

Post by Stan Disbrow » Mon Feb 22, 2010 3:07 pm

Hi,

OK. I *finally* did it. I managed to get (a) the crawler and (b) the camera outside on the same day and at the same time, even. A first!

So, here's some pix of the old girl.

1958 JD 420c Phase III. Originally sold by my uncle at his JD dealership in Copake NY to a local dairy farmer. It was used for barn cleaning and was traded in to the Pine Plains dealership in 1966 - on a wheel tractor with front-end loader.

My dad needed one of these, so he scarfed it up about the time the truck rolled in with it. It needed pins and bushings in the rails as the acids in the manure had done them in.

Otherwise, it was OK. Dad used it pretty heavily for the next 3-4 years, after which it was used to maintain a long driveway, plow snow, yank logs and such. He turned the pins and bushings around 1978 or so and also rebuilt the direction reverser at that time.

I replaced the steering clutches around 1990. Other than that, she's still original.

Well, except the seat, obviously. I still have the original high seat bottom, but it's pretty sad these days. That seat back is a seat bottom off of a 2010. Dad put one on in 1966 as he didn't like the short back. I replaced that 2010 seat a year or so ago when I put on the new bottom cushion. I wish I could find a source of those taller ones, but this generic tractor store one will do.

Edit 8 May 2018: OK. I *finally* recovered from the Great Photobucket Loss. I dug up these shots from my archive and uploaded them to our dedicated server. Oh, and I deleted everything from my Photobucket account while I was at it. I don't need their ignorant cloud service anyway. ;)

Hi,

Yes, I'm in Lillington, actually. I think of it as in the Raleigh area, but then that's thinking state-, nation- or even world-wide as it were. Maybe if I actually lived in Raleigh, I'd think of Lillington of being way down there in Harnett county!

Later!

Hi,

I always thought one washed a crawler by getting it stuck in a mud hole!

Lots of years of use and storage in a pole barn. It keeps the rain off, but the sun still fades the paint. She hasn't had paint on the track frames since, well, I can't remember when. They used to be yellow.

Actually, about half the track frame paint is still there, faded to white and covered in dust and dirt. I would not know how to act if the thing were ever restored and repainted along the way.

I'd think someone traded machines with me, actually!

BTW, I took these shots *before* I used it on the road Sunday. You know, when the thing was actually still clean! Or, as clean as she gets, anyway. The coating of rust on the blade is now gone once again, and you can't see the track frames for the dirt piles on them.

I have another pass to do this coming weekend, so I'll clean her up again afterwards. That consists of using a shovel on the trackframes to unload the dirt!

Oh I don't know, first thing I do with anything I restore for myself is put it in the dirt, that's what they are for. Nothing more fun that playing with a "new" 50 year old crawler after you spent months (years) rebuilding it.

Looks like a great machine to me.

Had a nice 420 slip through my hands by a day, so I ended up with my 350B.

Some day I'd like to get a 420 or an AC to tinker with.

Do you bother to paint the moldboard and the track pads the way the factory did?

I always chuckled at the JD logo they put on the moldboard. The paint I can understand. The logo screenprint, though. That one always baffled me. Like it would stay there for even five minutes!

I blast and paint pretty much everything. No logo on the face of the moldboard, but decals on the back wherever applicable.

I have put in a good days work on a brand new machine just getting that darned sticker off the blade .Shine the blade up and that sticker would still be half there .Take it into a gravel pit and push something gritty around and it will dissipate rather quickly though.Digitup.

Hi,

Yeah, the stickers are a lot more robust than the older method of screenprinting the things on. To get the color to pass thru the silkscreen mesh, it has to be really thin with tiny pigment particles. It's actually considered ink, not paint. The yellow stripes and the lettering on these 420's were all screenprinted on, which is why they don't hold up all that well. Of course, when one re-does one paint is used along with decals or cut vinyl which hold up extremely well. 8)

Maybe someday I'll re-do mine. I can't see just painting her, though. Of course, I could, but I'd want to completely tear her down and check everything and fix what needs it first. I can't stand the idea of a 'rebuild from a can'.

If I had the dough, I'd haul her up to Lavoy's place.

That must be the most complete machine I've ever seen.

How many times has the cutting edge been replaced? I'm wondering how long my new one will last.

Gonna go out and buy a small shovel to permanently mount somewhere on my 420 for those damned trackframes.
