They say you can do it, to me, easier to let it warm up a little bit, shut it down, engage the pump and restart.
Go by the book on timing, been a while since I did one.

I have disengaged my during cold weather,started the machine and flipped the lever back in once started,the only think that I didn't like was being so close to a fan spinning and yanking on a lever towards the fan.
the last time I used the warm it up and restart it method.

I have to also mention my was rusted really bad and it took taking it apart to get it working again.
