420C Paint Scheme
420C Paint Scheme
I recently purchased a '58 420 crawler with what appears to be the original paint and the the stripe down the side where it says john deere and 420 is painted white, not yellow. The letters and numbers are definitely not decals and it isn't just faded yellow. Someone told me that there were a few from the factory this way, just wondering if anyone else knew anything about it.
Thanks, John
Thanks, John

Hi,
The stripe is not paint. It's ink. Deere screenprinted the stripes and markings, and so the color is much more prone to light fading than yellow paint would have been.
Of course, they did it that way as it's much faster to screenprint on a stripe then to paint it on in the factory. One does not have to mask the part with a silk screen, since the screen automatically provides the masking. However, what you print on needs to be an enamal ink, which is applied very thinly and is made from much smaller pigment particles than paint is. Hence the light fading over the years.
My 1958 420c also sports a white stripe. With the darkening of the green and the whitening of the yellow stripe, the old girl looks more like an Oliver than a Deere!
However, I can say with certainty that mine originally had a yellow stripe on her, since she's been around since almost new and I remember whe it was most decidedly yellow!

Re: 420C Paint Scheme
Is there a difference between crawlers (420c) painted industrial yellow and the green/yellow scheme?

Re: 420C Paint Scheme
Nope, just the color of paint in the gun when it went down the assembly line.
