John deer 1010 track adjustment

Hey folks, Just got my "new" 1010 this weekend... changed fluids and ran it for 4 hours! Sure runs like a deere! I can do a heck of a lot more work in the dirt than I can with the loader/backhoe now.

The track slipped over the back drive gear a few times while pushing a decent size load, so I figured it needs to be tightened. I don't have a manual on order (wife says next paycheck or two)... I tried turning the big 2 '1/4 nut in this picture and it wont turn, any suggestions? I can see why some of you have a few of these machines, they run nice!

also, the steering levers/brakes have a mind of their own for working. At first just the right steering would go out, or come back in and work. Now its both. They work 100% for a few times then they fade to nothing, then they come back strong again with no real pattern. Are they shot? or can you adjust them... I heard to look under the seat for adjustment but all I got was more confused. Picture atatched also.


Was 4500$ too much... 990 hours on meter, and it's a working meter (looks original but u never know)

Hi,

There is no upload option. There is no storage space for photos on this site. You have to store the photos on an on-line hosting site and then link from here to there. That's the way it works with most messageboards.

I use Photobucket. Once you have photos online, you then use the img form of the link to copy the photo's address into the post like so:

I added spaces after the start img command and before the trailing /img command so you can see the link address for one of my online photos. Otherwise, you'd see the photo itself:

What I see in your post is the starting img command with no webaddress, so of course no photo is posted.

As far your machine goes, sounds like you have worn steering clutches and brakes. That machine has to have more hours than you see on that meter, for sure.

The track adjustments on 1010's were hydraulic as far as I know. At least I never saw a 1010 with nut and bolt adjusters like my 420c has, and that is what it sounds like you are describing.....

Of course, having a photo or two would be a big help, as I know that you know since you tried to post one! :P

Howdy. I got pics to host now. My problem is the tensioner is stuck one one side, and striped on the other. After it 8 hours of use on the machine, the track finally fell off. It sounds like most of you have hydraulic tensioner's and not the kind with the threaded rod and nut. Any advice on what to do with the threaded rods? They are rusted enough that the nut just skips over the threads when turned. Do I get it machined down a size, or would a replacement hydraulic adjuster work in its place (330$ each I noticed, ouch)

The parts book shows this system also... do I try to order the entire part from Mother Deere? The few times I called the local store they sounded like I was bothering them and I had to pull teeth just to talk about an old machine like this.

Part number 25, 27, 28 are what I am talking about.

None of the manual adjuster parts are available from Deere. I am working on them, just nothing done yet.

Took 8 hours of banging on it to find out that it needed to come out of the track system... then 5 hours of heating/banging and turning and spraying to get it apart. I had to split the 2 1/8th jam nut. Found a replacement nut for $3 at a local nut/bolt store.

Folks, we have a usable track adjuster.
Now I just need to fix the other side.

Now all I have to do is put it all back together! And it's snowing. Dangit! A week of downtime on the dozer and then it snows and rains for 3 days.

I'd like the meet the past owner that put the adjusters back together without a lick of grease on the threads, inside or out. I'd like to shake his hand. And then punch um in the gut!

An Anti-Seize product (many sources/producers) might serve you better for this type of application. Congrats on your getting the beast apart!
