Repairing 1959 440 ICD Crawler

Post by Yellow Machine » Wed Dec 22, 2010 3:54 pm

Has anyone ever rebuilt a drive sprocket? Do you have the specs for sizes, pitch etc. I have someone rebuilding the track with new pins and bushings and would also like to renew the drives. We tried to find a new tooth assembly with out any luck.
I also have a frozen brake lever in the steering clutch assembly and would like to free it up with out taking taking the whole thing out of the tractor. Any suggestions. Have tried heat and a anti seize compound but it did not work.

I think CarolinaCrawler on this site has a NOS sprocket for a 440 as well as the used sprocket he is selling (at least that is what the Ebay ad said). If so, you may want to talk to him.

By the time you are done welding them up, and having them machined correctly, you will have way more money in it than buying new ones. If you have the narrow dish sprockets, you can still cut the rim off of an NOS sprocket and weld it back on. I have one rim on hand now, should have a pair of sprockets.

I am new to this. What is NOS mean? Can you give me an idea what this might be worth. My freind who is a tool and die guy said he could weld up and machine fairly cheap???
The ones that were on ebay are no longer listed the time ran out. He was looking for $500 plus dollars. Don't know if that is a decent price or not for a pair of used sprockets.

Have you ever come across the other problem I have with the frozen rocker.

NOS stands for "new old stock". It basically means that the sprocket is new but has sat on the shelf since it was originally manufactured, sometimes for decades.

Lavoy can set you up with sprockets if he has them in stock- I had some for my 2010 shipped to me and the shipping was pretty reasonable. I know that there are some additional hurdles for shipments to Canada, however.

Thanks, I will leave a note for him here as I don't know how to get in touch with him.
The part # on the sprockets that are on the machine is T16261T. According to the book I have it means they are a regular sprockets.

Would you happen to have these Lavoy?

440 sprockets

Post by markvdh » Thu Dec 23, 2010 5:19 pm

Yellow Machine,

If Lavoy can't help, I've got a pair of brand new sprockets (NOS) that I'll sell. I've got a friend whose parents live near you, and I'm sure I could get them hauled from here to there reasonably if you could wait a while.

Another question. Does anyone know the Track Link Height on this machine? I have looked at other postings but can't find the info.My machine also has 4 bolt pads and according to my parts manual it looks like it can be either 2 or 4 but the info I am seeing on the site is this might not be correct that they are maybe off another machine.

440ICD Link Height

Post by markvdh » Wed Jan 05, 2011 12:56 pm

The 440 crawlers had both 2 bolt and 4 bolt pads. Your links are John Deere part #'s T14268 (left) and T14269 (right), and the original height on them was 3.19". If they are 3.00" or less, they are considered 100% worn per John Deere's track appraisal.

Thanks Mark
I think I will have to build them up. They are 100% worn according to this info.I also have a fellow doing all new pins and bushings. All of the rollers and track carriers are ok. I don't want bugger up the new sprockets Lavoy is sending me.
