Recent purchase was a 1959 440 crawler (detroit power) with loader. I have not been able to locate a service manual yet but I do have a parts manual. 1st problem is milky transmission oil, unsure of why,(I know water) but I would like to know capacity (5speed) and what type of oil. 2nd problem Reverser only works in the forward position, when you pull it back it sort of tries to go but doesn't. Does the reverser have an adjustment and does it have its own oil or does it use the transmission oil?
Everything else seems pretty good shape.
Thanks, Gordo

The JD service manual is worth every penny you pay. It answers these and most other questions that you will have. (be sure you get the 440ICD and NOT the 440IC manual)
Congrats on joining the unique "440C" owner's club.
My 440 ICD is my favorite due to Detroit Diesel engine.
Not too many good ones left, and they are by far the top of the heap and the last 2 cylinder crawlers built by JD.

The trans uses any 80-90wt and fills to the plug at your right heel when sitting on machine. The reverser uses hygard and fills via a bung on left side of reverser housing...I think it calls for an inch below the threads. There is an adjustment outlined in the manual that was simple enough but I cant remember the procedure well enough to guide you through it. You'll def want the manual and is needed for other crucial adj procedures as well- like clutch/steering/brakes.
Good luck!

That is the correct way. In fact, the machine must be completely stopped and clutch fully depressed prior to changing reverser in either direction to prevent possible damage.
If the ears are the problem, it could have been done by a previous owner.
