I found one of these yesterday. Has a JD blade on it. The guy made it sound like these were rare or at least a low production number. Runs great, but the sheetmetal is hammered. Thoughts and opinions?

Over 2,000 produced, no where near rare. They are desireable, as are all of the 30 series tractors, but not rare other than a couple odd fuel types, and I will guarantee he does not have one of them.
Lots of parts commonality with 420 and 440, so parts are not really an issue. New hoods are readily available, so not issue there either. Grilles can be tough, but they are out there. As with any crawler, buy an undercarriage first, drivetrain second, cosmetics are irrelevant for the most part.

I find that the most significant thing about rarity is the opinion of the guy selling it trying to drive the price up. I had a lady do that to me 15 years or more ago on a styled A I was looking at. She commented on how rare they were, then I told here they made roughly 300,000 A's. All of a sudden, they were not so rare any more.

I agree with Lavoy that "rare" takes on some new meanings, especially when people want to drive the price up and think the buyer does not know any better.
In this case, a production of 2,000 is low when compared to many other models. I guess the seller needs to find someone that just has to have a 430C and has more money than he has sense.
I have seen some folks try to push the price of these way up, I guess I will have to suffer the embarrassment of never owning one. I will get through it somehow.
