4th gear removal
4th gear removal
im trying to remove 4th gear from the input shaft to replace bearings and a new cluster gear. the manual says to press off the gear, well i tried with no luck , could the woodruff key be my problem .

I dont know how your gear is on. Yet on class 8 trucks (tractor trailers) a splined shaft going into a gear can get "torqued" making other wise straight splines be knocked evere so slightly out of straight. Hopefully yours is just a smooth shaft. Are you pressing this off with a hydraulic press? Have you tried to thrust the gear in other direction? As in is there a shoulder you may have been pushing the gear onto?

4th gear
hi lp14255, as was said on other posts, 4th gear is almost never used on a crawler. i've never put mine in 4th in 20 years! so, if you were pretty easy on the heating you probably didn't change the physical properties (heat-treatment) of the gear that much. i wouldn't hesitate using it, but then again i wasn't there to witness the heating process during removal. go with what your past experiences and your gut tell you. good luck on your project! randy from michigan
