What's a 450B with steering clutch problems worth?

Post by crawler123 » Sun Jul 31, 2011 10:54 am

Hello, my first post so I'll probably screw everything up.

So what do you think this thing is worth. Listed at $3500

1971 JD450B 1200 hrs on this motor and he says motor and trany are in very good condition. 6 way blade and skidder winch.
I have not actually seen it in person. The machine is on a online auction and it's physically 500 mile away from me. So shipping is another big expense. Any ideas on getting it shipped? Saw an online site called Uship.
I'm not to sure about hauling this with a goosneck and my 3/4 ton dodge cummins.

He admits there are steering clutch problems. He says the crawler will move forward and backward but not steer left or right.
So I guess both steering clutches are seized up.

So what are some questions I should be asking him?

Are all these 450B's diesel? I don't want to get a gas tractor.

So any help here will be appreciated.
thanks
Dennis

There are two main problems I did not like about the 450 and 450B.

The dry clutches were are repeated maintenance item. The wet clutches in the 450C was a huge improvement.

The next problem is the wear on the front crossmember. It was another huge improvement when they began using the rigid crossmember on the later model 450C.

I have had 3 450's, 1 450B, 3 450C's and and 2 550's The 550 was fast and nice with pedal steering.

I recently ran a 550G for a couple weeks and that was another huge leap for JD dozers. I moved a lot of dirt with dual slopeboards. I made a house pad going 12 feet down to solid rock.

i use my 3/4 ton gmc and goose neck to pull around my crawler. as for the clutches maybe they just need to be adjusted.

Welcome to the board!!

Please do not take this as negative, but ever wonder why there is no one else interested in the crawler in the 500 miles between you? In other words, are we to believe that there is absolutely no one local or within short driving distance that likes old crawlers?
It is sad but what I have found is that the further away you are, the better they make it sound. I mean afterall, when they have your money you are basically going to take what is there no matter what.
I got burned on a few 2 cylinder tractors due to distance and thinking that they were being honest. But a tractor in most cases can be easy and cheap compared to a crawler.
If the undercarriage is trash (no matter what they tell you or show you in pictures), then you are in for a "deep pockets" experience.
Best of luck, sometimes we get lucky.

Thanks for the replies.

Yep JD440ICD2006 I was thinking the same thing. Probably being 500mi away he thinks I won't come by in person to look at it.

lp14255 I have looked into hauling it with a goosneck and it would probably be cheaper if I did it that way. I'm just not experienced enough in hauling something that heavy that distance. I guess I need to start somewhere.

vestor_guy I have been reading alot about the problems with the dry clutches. Yes I thought they probably could be unstuck. I need to ask this guy how much he has done to try and fix the problem.

Anyway do you think this is too much money to spend on this problem case?

Thaks KenP for your good words.

You are good to find that auction that quick. But you probably noticed that there are not many there to choose from.
Yes it is a pretty low starting bid and there are no takers yet ;-)

The guy does say the engine and transmission are working good. But you are right I did notice that the exhaust pipe is missing. That question is one on the top of my list. It wouldn't take to long for water to get in there and cause damage.

I just received some pictures from the seller. After looking at the drive sprockets I can tell they look pretty worn. A couple pictures show the engine and it is turbocharged. I didn't realize that this year of 450B were turboed.
I suppose the turbo would have collected water from the missing exhaust stack for a while.

Well I got some of the pictures posted thanks to Chuck.
After looking closely at some of them I can see this machine is pretty worn.
When I asked the seller if he had tried to free the steering clutches his response was just that they were seized.
I asked about the exhaust stack being missing he said a year. He thought the water would go through the turbo and not get in the engine.
He said it had been run about 6 months ago.
I think if I were to bid on this one I would like to see and hear it run first.
Might ask him to send me a short video clip with sound.
Still not too sure.

Opinons are like other things, everyone has one. But in my opinion, I would allow him to finish enjoying this crawler unless that is the ONLY one you can find for sale in 500 or so miles of your home.
The price and cost to ship it are not going to be your issue, it is what it is going to take to get it to where it operates properly.
A video of it running would be interesting, but still does not change the obvious deep wear on parts that are either expensive or cannot be located.

Typically when it will actually not run, you get some lame story about they don't have a hot battery around to start it but they heard it run 6 months ago. When they use a story like that, tell them that you do not have any money but you "saw some 6 months ago, if that counts".

I am beginning to see things your way Chuck.
Do you know of any other sources I can check.
I have been looking around quite a while and I'm just not finding anything.
There seems to be pretty slim pickens out here in the big sky state.
That is unless you can spend 5 figures or use something with green paint.
I'm afraid I'm going to need something yellow paint and tracks to push snow this coming winter.

I always ask for the manuals as well if they have them then you know they were trying to fix the problem and manuals for the machine are handy anyway. It's not top price any way but it shouldn't be too hard to fix the clutches .I would look for a decent float to haul the old Deere.I mean locally the old Dodge is fine but any long distance hell the fines can be worth more than the crawler.Get a price and make them stick to it as much as possible.I have a 12 ton float and a wound up Super Duty handy but after 15 miles the tires are hot and it is just not the machine for haulin a 450 Deere for many miles I am fortunate to have a 40 ton and two 55 ton floats as well as several larger in shop these are the trailers for long haul not the small stuff the transportation guys even pick on the small stuff .I know I have more hassle with the small stuff than the big stuff .Digitup,
