Recommended spark plugs for 420?

Post by Paul Buhler » Sun Sep 04, 2011 4:16 pm

Hi: I could not find a recommended plug for a 420 in my manual. I see that some of you run Champion H10c, like I have currently, and some like other brands or temp ranges. Could I get some ideas as to preferences and why? Thanks. Paul

Autolite 216 is a good one. Manual for 440 says Champion H-10, Prestolite 14L7B, AC delco 45L. Of course you can cross reference any of these in NGK or whatever brand on the internet. I'll run Autolite 216 next spring, if I'm done with my rebuilt! I didn't like H10 that much. Got to have plenty of them in my pocket!

Thanks. I fouled a plug the other day, at an inconvenient time, and I've seen that some don't like the Champion H10 for that reason. I figure that an older machine like mine which burns a bit of oil may need either a hotter plug or one that tends to foul less. I'll try the Autolite 216. Any other preferences? Thanks again. Paul

Another cause of plug fouling for me was an electrical problem. I had a bad regulator and loose ground on the machine. The alternator didn't charge the battery. Low battery voltage=low coil output... weak spark. That made me change A LOT of H10's for nothing before I put a meter on the battery. Another point is today's fuel quality. Back then it had lead and high octane in it. Now it's a mixture of petrol/ethanol/whatever. A Bit Harder to burn clean. I think I'll add some octane in the cocktail after reading several posts on the subject here. Some even run 100LL avgas in these 2 bangers. My uncle always add a shot of octane in his 1010 tank when refueling. He changed to electronic ignition as well. Of course the compression has to be good in cylinders.

Thanks for the additional input. I found this site with some more info too. Can never have too much info; the challenge is in the decision making. :D

I have tried both for my 8N tractor and am a fan of the Autolite 216 over the Champion H10- however it seems to vary on the machine used. Some of these threads were intersting to read about this:

Tigerhaze: Thanks for the links. Using the correct search keywords can get you what you want to know IF you are lucky enough to stumble upon them. I had found two of your links, but wasn't savvy enough to find the others.
I now have enough info to definitely give the Autolight 216 a try. Thanks for taking the time to dig the info up for me. Paul

Hey Paul-

I was able to find many of those because I was involved in those discussions. I have found that using a keyword search plus the author field gets better results. The author field actually is any person that posted on the thread- not just the original author.

For instance Jdemaris was involved in most of the really good injector and injector pump discussions; when I want to find those I will put "injector" or "injector pump" in the keyword search plus "Jdemaris" in the author search and will get most of them. The author search is also really helpful if you know you personally posted something in a thread and can't find it.

Just thought you would appreciate another search hint.

I have had consistently bad luck with the Champions for many years, I sell Autolite or AC only.
