Need help to identify my crawler???

Post by fortgary » Thu Nov 17, 2011 7:56 pm

I am told this crawler is a 1952 John Deere 40, but I havent been able to find any numbers or markings on it. It needs a lot of work so I want to begin by research, just not sure where to begin.

Fortgary,
Welcome, If it still has the serial # tag on it (carburator side of the bellhousing) that will simplify identifying where it is in the production run.
This is important for getting the correct parts. However these old girls often have a combination of major components that may contain different parts from the originals so it can be a detective game trying to find the correct parts. A parts manual is a must along with the service manual.
If no serial # tag then pics of dash, trans, engine sides and front, etc can help get close.

The battery on the gas tank is a bit scarry.

Good luck ,

Chuck

FortGary,
Looks like your serial number plate is missing or just may be painted over. The spot it should be is under the gas filter in that one photo. You can see the rivet on the right side that holds in on.
