how to get loader raised to gain acess to the engine
how to get loader raised to gain acess to the engine
Hi
I tried to start the 450 crawler today, pushed the button and nothing? Battery good, can't get to the engine to trouble shoot. I have a 30 HP tractor with front loader but it's not strong enough to lift the crawler bucket. any idea's how to get the bucket raised?
Charlie.

first thing to try is the safety switch. Hold the key in the start position and shake the HLNR lever. It may not be making contact. Next thing to check is the switch itself. Remove the left floor panel and down on the side will be a switch with two wires. Remove the wires and short across the wires. Try to start again.
Next thing to check is the starter solenoid. Use a volt meter and see if you are getting voltage to the solenoid terminal.

Does your ammeter work? If it jumps when you push the button, that's a good sign that the safety switch that vector_guy mentioned is working and it's just a problem with the solenoid (or possibly the starter motor). If the ammeter is diving when you hit the button, find a nice long, narrow bar and tap the solenoid when you're hitting the button, it'll probably go.Charlie wrote:Hi

I checked the voltage at the Sol. 9.5 volts Battery 13.6 volts.
It was a chore getting the meter probe on the terminal, can't do much else until I get the bucket raised. I think from now on I will leave the bucket raised before shutting down and install the safety device on a cylinder. Deere should have installed a hand hydrolic pump that would allow you to raise the bucket to gain access to the engine.

First thing I would check is the battery ground, but if that is OK be aware that you can jump start from another vehicle with the jumper cables leading straight to the starter terminal, and the negative jumper cable clipped to the starter housing.Charlie wrote:I checked the voltage at the Sol. 9.5 volts Battery 13.6 volts.

Apologies if you already know this, but here is a picture for the sake of completeness:
Clip the jumper cable to the terminal at 12:00, and then try to start it with the key. If thast does not work just jumper between the 12:00 terminal and the 9:00 terminal.
Then you can raise the bucket and move it to somewhere convenient if you need to.

Before I did anything with raising the loader, I would indeed do as the previous poster stated. Clean the battery cables. You should have gotten more than 9 volts at the solenoid and a much larger dip in the ammeter. If the solenoid winding was "open", you would have gotten battery voltage. If the solenoid was "stuck" with no movement, you would have had the "pull" windings drawing a lot more current.
If the battery cables are ok, then I would suspect the pull winding being open.

If I remember correctly, the boom cyclinder has a full forward float position that locks the handle and opens the cylinders to the hydraulic tank. You should be able to raise the bucket without removing any hoses.
Hi
Got the starter to operate by tapping on it. started to dig out some rocks and the engine died, now to find out why it wont start. I will start with fuel, when it died the rpm kept getting lower like the throttle was going to the idle position. Its a good thing I don't have to making a living with this machine,I would surely starve to death like the crawler did. (if it's a fuel issue)

To answer your first question, I was able to lift the bucket and arms with a farm jack and the simple car jack (hydraulic) works too. It will take some time because you will have to support it as you go and then let it down and re-set the jack or lift and then repeat but it can be done as I have done it all the way to 3 feet before I got my 450 started. No kidding though it takes some work and time.
Hope this helps.

Hi
well, I got the crawler started, it was a fuel issue, I let the fuel tank get to low and the engine was starved for fuel. filled the tank and it ran good all afternoon. I now will block the bucket up using the safety bar over the cylinder rod before turning the engine off. I think I will order a new starter and Sol. 110.00 dollars and free shipping.
Thanks all for the replies they helped me get through these problems. I sure hope this website never shuts down, double thanks to those that run and maintain it.
