Finally making some progress, however I've been working on it almost every night. Sorry the pictures aren't the best, I took them last night, I'll try to get some during the day.
I laid some paint to her over the weekend. Never again will I paint that many parts at one time.
Lavoy, I don't know how you do it but the way I did things sure doesn't seem to be the easiest. I thought getting everything ready would be a good idea, but I soon learned that I didn't have enough space to lay all the parts out and it is a lot of working painting that much. On the other hand, I don't know how you paint a few things at a time and keep things from getting scratch and dirty etc.
If you notice I had to repaint some of the pieces I did last fall. This is because we had the parts on a shelf and the shelf fell over and the parts got all banged up
Anyways, enjoy the pics and any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I am kind of surprised you didnt use some body putty on the undercarriage rail where you have the goober hole from rust. Just me I suppose.




Always a nicer job when you can take more of it apart to do a frame up painting.

Willyr, I debated smoothing up the undercarriage but figure it would be more trouble than it was worth. It was in pretty rough shape because it's been sitting outside for so long with the mud and dirt left on it. I would've had to make the whole carriage smooth or it would have looked out of place.
Also, I don't know how well puddy would hold up with a rattly old dozer clanking along haha.
I also have the 602 blade so there is a huge plate that will attach near that bad spot and cover part of it up.

One of the themes that comes up from time to time in this hobby is how someone should restore their project.
I have my set of guidelines such as no alternators on pre 1960 machines, etc., but I make a practice to not push my views off on others.
It is their machine and they can do with it what they wish, short of them asking my advice or opinions.

2006 has a good point, but by no means was I offended at all Willyr so hopefully you don't take any of it the wrong way
If the dozer wasn't in such bad shape I would have spent more time taking care of the rust pitting but as you can see from just the gauge pod, there were holes rusted through.
So the gauge pod, instrument panel, hood, grille (which isn't done yet) and seat all got a skim coat of puddy and smoothed because that is what the majority of people pay attention to.
It's my first restore and I also plan to use the crawler so it will get scuffed up some I'm sure.
Any suggestions on what to do with the tracks. Brush paint black?

Tracks were originally same color as the crawler, but again, paint how you want. Sandblast, prime and paint is the best, but you will need a big area to lay them out to do so.

Can you sandblast them without getting too much sand into the pins/bushings? I was afraid of sand getting in there and binding them up. I was going to pressure wash them good and maybe wire wheel.

Like I said it was only my opinion. Glad you told me about the blade. With that knowledge I too would not have bothered to clean up the lines where it is hidden with the blade.

Thank you for the kind words.
I will be a little hesitant to get it dirty at first, but I want to see what it can do. I can't wait for the first time to drop the blade into the ground and watch some dirt roll up and some smoke come out the stack

I got the other rock guard on and all rollers bolted down last night, so the under carriage is ready to flip right side up and paint. I got the water associated stuff on (water pump, water necks, etc.) and fan. I'm still trying to track down new radiator hoses.

Progress is much faster now that everything is ready, holes are tapped and I have all new and correct bolts. I'll get some more pics this weekend hopefully.

Yes you will get sand in the tracks, but if you were working in a sand pile, you would get sand in them as well, so no real difference. Anything you run the crawler in will get in the tracks, so don't worry about that.

Does the reverser work on yours?

Mine doesn't have a reverser unfortunately. I think it should just have a plate on the reverser case instead of the cover that it does have, but that's what was on there when I dug it out.
Did you make some progress on bull2? You find anything out about that 440 you saw on the side of the road a while back?

I've got a few pics from the progress over the past week. Slow but steady as usual. I'm at the difficult part of getting the fuel lines and elbows etc. that I need to make all new.
