Normal Oil Burn?

Post by VT350C » Mon Jul 23, 2012 12:41 pm

Hello there,
Thanks to all for your help in the past! I have a newly rebuilt JD350C engine...also new injectors (3) and reman injector pump...So the engine is like new...New recore on radiator too...I have less than 50 hours on the rebuild and she's burning oil...maybe 2 quarts in 30 or so hours...Is this normal? Is this part of the break-in period...I know I have to do a complete oil change soon...I have also been working the unit pretty hard...stumping and digging out stumps...Just wondering if this is "normal" or I should be alarmed...It's a 1982 unit.
Thanks!
Bob

Did you rebuild the motor? Did you forget to stagger the rings?

I didn't rebuild it, a mechanic did...We did a full rebuild...piston, liner, rings...ground the head and the block...

I am not too aware of these things. What do you mean "stagger the rings?" I thought the pistons had a notch where the rings insert and you don't have a choice...

Oh, and I need to update my old post...I'm the guy that couldn't get the machine running after putting in new injectors and injector pump...Turned out I had no compression in 1 of 3 cyl and there was a 1 broken ring and 1 stuck ring...

Thanks for your help!

Did a search and found a nice picture of "staggering" piston rings:

Your rings if not staggered will allow a rebuild to burn oil. Take it back to the mechanic. It should have a warranty. If not consult a small claims court.

Two quarts in 30 hours does seem a bit excessive. Any chance your mechanic used Chrome rings? From everything I have ever heard those can be a real bear to get to seat in. I know caterpillar used to actually recommend ....( not that I would do this )....using what they called a break-in powder. It was some sort of really fine, mild abrasive powder that they would let the engine aspirate down the breather without a filter. The powder would abrade the rings just enough to make them seat. I have even heard of guys doing this with ajax powders with Chrome rings........again, not my recommendation! An easy check is to see how much blowby your getting into the crankcase. Lots of blowby means a ring problem, no blowby.....time to go insearch of leaking gaskets, seals, hole in a oil filter.....anything is possible when it comes to leaks.
