Not much meat to drill them out, but I have welded then shut, and then re-drilled.

What exactly are those pins called and how do you mushroom the ends once they're in the hole? Also, where do you get them?

The old ones were just roll pins, didn't know they changed them.

They haven't changed them. They have been "Roll or Spring" pins for as long as I can remember. There is a difference between a "Roll" pin and a "Spring" pin. However both were used for years in this application and I think it only mattered what Deere had on the line at the time of assembly.
A "Roll" pin is just that... A tightly rolled pin made from a very thin piece of spring steel.
A "Spring" pin is a hollow pin with an open slot the full length of the pin. It is also made of spring steel. Most people will call them "Roll" pins and that's okay. I do the same thing. It is only purest machinists that will set you straight on the difference. They both do the same thing. However the real "Roll" pin is stronger but is harder to install.
There are also "Wedge" or "Tapered Groove" pins that Deere used that are tapered slightly to one end. Usually with embossed groves down the length of the pin and were considered to be a one time use pin. They were also directional. You installed them in a given direction and then had to remove them in the reverse direction. Some times proving to be a real challenge to remove. As far as I know these weren't used in this application though.

Leonard its nice to see some one that knows what a split pin is .....i bet you cringe when someone asks for a FREEZE PLUG ......on my 2010 some of the pins would not stay in so i put 1/4 bolts in them worked great
2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper
I have always seen the spring pins referred to as roll pins, and the wound pins as Spirol pins, learn something new here everyday. Of course my problem is remembering anything I learn!

I also thought at first they were just roll pins but mine like I said are mushroomed on each end so they don't fall out. I know for a fact these are original as I bought this dozer almost new in 1985.If they were just regular pins, with all the slop I have they would have fallen out long ago.Did grind about 1/4'' off the edge of the hyd. reservoir hatch so now at least I have easy full control of raising my blade. Will tackle this sloppy linkage on a rain day. Thanks everyone.

John Deere parts page shows your 450D with a 6405 blade control having several spring pins and two "Chain Links" as being the pivot mechanisms for the controls. I'm wondering if the pins you say are mushroomed on the ends are the chain links. They will have a swedged appearance at the pins on the links. Just a thought...

I remember trying to fix a set of those that were worn out when I bit the bullet and bought the new cast pieces . T bar worked best after though I know that I remember walking out of the dealers with a hand full of cast iron and a hell of a bill thinking it's not like it's electronic's or hydraulics's!!guess what I am saying is You really need to buy the dam little cast pieces and roll pins and that T bar will work like new .Remember how you took that apart OK!![There was an up grade on the nylon bushing on the handle If I remember ] some we had to put two bushings on or even a thin stainless washer to set handle straight up.Digitup.

Like I originally said--yes,it was about $100 for that kit 30 years ago.Now it's $1,100.NOT worth it by a long shot.I told my dealer Deere should be ashamed at that price--the feeling I get is they want you to update to new or newer and let the old iron be scrapped.digitup2 wrote:I remember trying to fix a set of those that were worn out when I bit the bullet and bought the new cast pieces .
