thats partly true but the detroits had a nasty habit of building up carbon quickly on the injector tips leading to a poor spray pattern. if i remember correctly it was due to the two cycle not properly scavenging and removing all the burnt gasses at idle. at a slightly raised rpm the supercharger could more effectively move the air
Always run a Detroit like you want it spread it's guts across the acerage you are working on and if it isn't working shut it off oil pressure is just one factor the scavenger air is the other if you aren't at more than 1700 rpm the scavenger system[roots screw air pump] is working like turbo lag and you have half the power of being wound up they are made to run there I have owned and ran a lot of diesel motors and a Detroit is a different beast [Rug the throttle and get her done]that is what a Detroit is built to take I still have 4 of them and you only Idle them to warm them up don't let them hunt and don't let them idle mid range as oil pressure can drop near 1500 rpm This is why we used 50 weight oil in the Terex loaders and Dozers as with 50 weight the oil pressure was higher at mid range.Put all you learned about other engines a side these are a beast that can run hard for a long time and stink and slobber and scream.But as they were built they would do that for as long as a 4 stroke as long as you work them hard and shut them down sweating they won't complain.Digitup.
We ran an 8240 Terex for many years with an 8V-71N. Great old dozer and what a roar from the Detroit, always had a good pair of ear muffs on.

a friend of mine told me when i got my truck with a DD 6V53 that he was told when he started driving " Walk up to truck, open door insert thumb in door jamb slam door on thumb get in and drive it like you want to blow it up all day" and it will run forever .... DD calls for straight 40WT oil DO NOT USE MULTI GRADE for more on DD OIL REQUIREMENTS GO TO busnuts.COM

Ya Lavoy I had a 8240 Terex with a 6 foot drainage plow on it just a brute of a machine !.I was topping a hill one day and wanting to drain the low spot on the other side I took the top 8 inches of the hill with the blade and the drainage plow was right slammed at the 6 foot deep point The old Green beast just grunted and did both jobs at the same time that plow at that depth took 70000lbs tractive pull in good going Yes she did some barking and I always wore ear protection but I think it was the problem with my hearing now .Or maybe it's selective hearing when the old girl talks now either way I use that dam Terex as the excuse.Digitup.

We ran trucks with 671's and our old cable plow tractor has a 453 in it. Yes, they need to be run hard. Very dependable engines, we also used to buy ex-railroad equipment for wrecking and would sell upwards of 25 Detroit engines a year. We would have customers bring there engine core and swap there accessories on the spot so they left with a complete drop in. Still have lots of engines and parts left.
I wanted some vintage Detroit powered equipment, hence the 435 Deere and 1900 Oliver. A 440icd should be leaving the states tomorrow and arriving mid week. looks to have good under carriage, complete original 3 point hitch and a bad tranny or rearend. We have all parts in stock no matter what the drive train issue is so will only be labour to repair. Should look good beside a 430 dozer that I'm sourcing some parts for. Next on my buy list is a detroit powered MFWD Oliver / Cockshutt / white. Found out a few months ago our old parsons cable plow is most likely one of the most rare versions of these tractors, a 4-115 mighty tow.
I'm looking forward to trying the 435 out at a tractor pull, the previous owner rebuilt the motor with high compression pistons and bigger injectors. It won't start unless the throttle is idled all the way down as it over fuels if wide open. Runs and sounds great.

Careful on pulling a 435 real hard with that much power. They never put the bigger trans in the 435 like they did in the 440's, so trans problems were an issue. They were kind of notorious for eating ring and pinions.

Jason if you go back and look at the link it shows $4100, I am pretty sure that was the sale bid. I used to work their auctions in Texas a lot, they had a disposal point at Dyess AFB, here in town, and I have bought a bunch of items thru them but they got silly with their min. bids and etc. I don't even remember what my login was with them now.

When I first started thinking about a 435, I assumed it was just going to be a 430 tractor with a detroit strapped in vs. the gas engine like a 440 crawler. When I parked my 430 tractor beside it, the 435 appears to have a much more substantial rear end and different tin. I would almost guess that from the transmission back it is a 530. I need a top link if anyone has a line on one.
Anyways, this is how I bought the tractor. The previous owner painted it, but still needs a bit of body work on it. It runs incredible, no smoke.
Can't wait to get working on the ICD. My dad also started an ICD project about 5 years ago and thats where it ended. Basically just an engine thru to the final drives assembled.
Up here, any vintage tractor with a detroit comes with a big premium.

Looking for original
I'm fussy, I'm looking for an original. Does anyone know if its the same as a 430 tractor? I've seen pictures with both the 430 style plus a larger version. I'm focusing on a 430 crawler first. I couldn't find some of the missing 3 point hitch pieces so Lavoy is fabricating them for me. I may have enough original pieces once my ICD arrives to finish the 430 then the 440 will get the reproductions. As for other missing top links, I could use an original 430 and a 350 if there any out there that someone would like to part with.
I really like original, I even swapped out some fairly good jobber type idlers , sprokets and rails on my 350C to Deere. I haven't been able to work on any of my deeres since July anyways.[/img]
