JD 420C Steering clutch adjustment

Post by Botieal » Sun Sep 30, 2012 6:55 pm

I have a JD 420C. I have a lot of play in the steering clutches. I tried to adjust the play by the book. When I loosened the cap screw on the throw out bearing, I can't get the throw out bearing to move in or out. The shaft is wet (oil). I only unscrewed the cap screw 2 turns out, I don't know how long it is and did not want to lose it in the bottom of the final cavity. As it is, it turns ok. Both clutches release about the same point, half the travel of the lever. The brake is almost to the seat.
Any suggestions....

420 stearing adjustments

Hi Botieal! Sounds like you need to tighten up the brake bands (nut with the cross hatches), so the brakes will apply sooner and reduce your lever travel( so your not hitting the seat). Good luck! Randy from Michigan

Be careful tightening up the bands. If they engage too soon, they'll engage before the clutches are released and could tear the centers out of the clutches.

I adjusted the brakes up to just when the clutches release.

Two turns is enough. If it still won't move, throwout bearing carrier is rusted into the cam. If so, only way to fix is pull the final.

I bought some AeroKoil, sprayed the throwout bearing and lightly tapped the bearing. It came loose and I made my adjustments.
I appreciate all the excellent tips.
Thanks

Isn't it nice when a simple fix works. After so many "boy this would be good if it works out" experiments we all deserve a simple solution once in a while. Congratulations.
