I recently built a battery box and mounted it right behind the seat, tied it to the under seat battery and with the two, it really cranks the 12 V starter over nicely. When I do a tear down and complete restoration this winter, I plan on changing over to an alternator and negative grounding system. I'm brand new to this site and will offer parts to any of you as I've accumulated 5-1010 dozers and 3-1010 loaders to part out. Had my original dozer since 1980 and have done just about everything to it but the complete restoration. Thanks for all your great information.

I'm assuming you' ve got the two 12 volt batteries in parallel and not series?

With later crawlers like the 350s and 450s - Deere offered diesels with one battery in warm areas and dual batterie in parallel in cold areas for better cold starting. At 0 degrees F, battery capacity is cut by 50% so . . . adding two batteries gives cold battery power equal to one battery in warm temps.

Oh Yea!! Parallel for sure. That's exactly the reason I did it as I use my dozer with the frame mounted arch in the winter pulling out firewood. Also for a point of information I put synthetic Amsteel Blue winch line on it. It has a higher working load rating than 1/2" steel cable and 100' only weighs 6-1/2 pounds.
