New 420c pics, and a couple newbie questions...

Post by JimmyFunk » Mon Oct 29, 2012 6:19 pm

Here are some pics of my new crawler. Im hoping to play with it some this weekend but I want to make sure that everything is in working order. I plan on changing all the fluids, and I know the one track needs adjusted. Is there anything else that I should check for adjustment before I get started?
I did see on one website to measure across 5 links and 4 pins for a measurement to determine % of track left... Can anyone explain this process? Also I was told it is hard on the crawlers to use reverse as a gear you use.. I was told use 1-5 and the reverser and only reverse when backing out of garage or trailer? Is there any truth to this? Also I am assuming that once it is put in gear that if its in first the reverser lever should be forward Correct? Then clutch it and pull backwards for reverse. Lavoy what year crawler has where you can drain the oil from the reverser and refill it?
Thanks for any help I get on here I appreciate having a place to go where I can gain some knowledge
Jimmy

Your 420 is a late 58, evidenced by the clutch type reverser lever on the LH side of the dash. This assumes that a clutch type reverser has not been retrofitted into an earlier crawler.
In reference to an earlier question, reverser uses Hygard or equivalent.

welcome Jimmy watch out it is easy to addicted to 420 LOL ....... as for the track condition i have 2010s but it looks to me judging from your adjusters that you need to repin and bush if your rails are still good enough

If I ever get up to the Warthers wood carving museum again I see your right down the road from there might have to slip over for a visit. I was there for the first time last Feb. only had 2 hours to go through the place and it literly blew my mind what that man did. You also have a nice show in Dover only been there once but some of the guys that run the show brought there jackshaft down to plain city show about 10 yrs ago so we could prove to the rest of the members how much better a sawmill will run when you don't have a steam engine belting up directly to the mill. They literly would pull so hard to tighten up the belt they where bowing the shaft. Getting a dozer is like trying to eat just one potatoe chip you can't just have one LOL

Howard where is the wood carving place that you are talking about? Dover does put on a very nice show I have been there many times. If you are ever around this area by all means get a hold of me and stop by the shop. Always love talking to fellow tractor enthusiasts..

The museum is right as you get off the free way for dover if your heading north you turn right and it is on the right. Boy I can't beleive you live that close to it and havn't heard of it. It is a must see place. I wanted to take the wife up there for our aniversery but don't think it wil work out. If you get a chance go see it.

They diffinetly have one nice steam show at Charm that is a beatiful valley with the smoke coming out of the steam engines only been there once to. If you haven't been to that show you need to go to it to. They also have some nice bed and breakfast up in that area.

Howard if you come down to see Jimmy you better go an extra 20 min. and stop and see me.

Jimmy, I just noticed you live in Carrollton. I actually live in Amsterdam, not far from you at all. Great to know there are others from the area on here.
