Seeping 440 Gas Fuel Tank At Outlet

Post by Scott Corbett » Tue Dec 04, 2012 2:58 pm

What is the best way to seal the inside of a fuel tank?

Have a seeper, does not drip but always slightly wet at tank sump bottom.

Thanks,
Scott

there is a guy on eBay that reconditions 440 tanks or go to Johnson fuel tank liner 800 747 0030 or Eastwood has a few different products that should work for you

I have used Red-Kote fuel tank liner a number of times with good success. Costs about $30 a quart which is more than enough. You will recover much of it and can reuse it by adding a little MEK.

Before you seal the tank clean out any rust. I have added a handful of nuts and bolts and rattled them around to get loose rust flakes. Some people recommend muriatic acid flushed with water. In either case, then flush with MEK and use the sealer.

Last JD440 tank I did had a pin hole so I decided to take it to a radiator shop for welding. Glad I did. Under pressure they found and brazed a half dozen small holes. Then I sealed it with Red-Kote for insurance. Gil

Scott-

You may be able to find a local radiator repair place that like Gil suggested will also do fuel tanks. I know of a radiator place in KC that also works on fuel tanks- unfortunately they only braze diesel fuel tanks (due to liability of gasoline vapors) but there may be others that do gas fuel tanks.

I took in a small diesel tank for a walkbehind roller compactor with a number of pinholes and they brazed the tank up nicely.

tank seepage

Post by pop pop » Thu Dec 06, 2012 12:49 pm

hi scott,
on my seeping tank, i took it out and "started" with one area and ended up re-brazing the seams as well as many areas on the rest of it. used a dunk tank to check for bubbles,,, i used a bit of air pressure,,,
took awhile but its a good tank again.
push on suspected areas with your thumb, if it gives you know its going to get rusted thru very soon.
440icd/602/8a,,440icd/831/ripper,,440icd/831/3pt.,misc. 440 parts, i have 5 of these now, but i can stop anytime

I have used this product before,
http://www.por15.com/FUEL-TANK-REPAIR-K ... info/FTRK/
It works very well, I have used it to repair two tanks that I have on equipment here. One has been in use for ten years, with no re-occurrence of the leaks. The other tank was a basket case with more leaks than you could count.
Read and heed the included instructions, the second tank I repaired had to be cleaned twice to get the gum out of it but the Marine Clean did its work.
I had to patch the biggest holes in the tank with epoxy putty before lining the tank. After the putty hardened I sanded the putty down and then cleaned the tank for the third time.
I is not a "Quick Fix" it takes 96 hours for the sealer to harden completely after draining the excess out of the tank.
