1010 problem with starter

Post by ktheaker » Mon Dec 17, 2012 4:42 pm

i had left the old gas 1010 at the cottage outside for the winter and had used the girl a little to grade the property and in the late fall i noticed it was not engaging the starter always but with a couple times at the key switch it would finally engage the starter , i thought it was solenoid or key switch - intermitant . i brought it home and went to start it a day ago and same thing , it seemed to engage and then not . i pulled the starter thinking i would send it out for a rebuild and found a fair bit of water coming out the nose when bringing it out of its frame mounting area . i have read some posts on turning a bolt 180* or ? what should i be doing . i do notice 2 bolts that hold the case of the starter and i have never taken one apart . or i could just put back in and suspect that the water was the problem and reinstall . your thoughts please

Hi: I dug into my starter last year and found it relatively easy to repair. I've included a link from that time with some pictures ( you'll have to wade through some other pictures too). I hope you find something of use. Good luck Paul

if it just clicks that would be solenoid you can sometimes take the cover off of it and clean and turn the one bolt 180 on some you can reverse the washer or just clean it with sand paper ... but if it trys to crank and kicks out that would be the drive(Bendix)if it is gas then it only has two bushings i would also replace them and the brushes

track repairs

Paul Looked at all your pics in regard to this subject (starter) but what i liked was the pins and bushing job. I have a 420 4roll and it needs the tracks fixed up where did you get the job done? I'm down in Putney

I rebuilt my starter also and with some patience it worked out well

vtjoe: Here's a link to the thread on this rebuild with an email address for having the pins and bushings done. Good luck. Paul
