420 project
420 project
I got my 420 runnig finally havent had time to play with much. The motor runs great considering its just been built. The tractor moves fowards and backwards good but will not turn left. After using it and getting it under a load pushing some dirt it would turn left going fowards and backwards. But once the load is removed it won'turn why is this? And the left lever has pressure on it until it gets to the end and it pop?? Also after the tractor warmed up the reveser won't go in revser what would cause this?? It would just grind? And when the crawler got warm the transmission is making a roaring nosie especially in 1st gear?? Sorry for the long post but it was fun to run for the frist time ever we had a nice 70 degree day here in ga and I ran it most of the day/

Also remember that in the phase two 420's, there was a factory defect in the trans case, and the fill plug is located too low, so ultimately, the trans is two quarts low.
If you have the serial number range that corresponds to this, install a 3/4-1/2' reducer in the fill hole, and it will compensate for the low level.

Near as I can tell, 116,145 by the parts book. I would have to dig through a thousand pages of service bulletins to find the original bulletin, but I am pretty sure I am correct.
Correct, bushing not coupling.

Re: fill plug
+1 on that. I did not know that and I might have one too.vtjoe wrote:Lavoy--- what is the s/n split for the 3/4-1/2 assembly and I assume you meant bushing instead of reducing coupling????

Lavoy,
Is it the M3552T case that needs this modification? On my second 440 it is an earlier case and I noticed noise in first gear too after rebuilding.

No, 440 did not come out until the Phase 3 420's, and the problem had been corrected by then.

To the best of my knowledge, no, but I am really not sure. I spent the last couple hours searching my service bulletins and found it. It says that the change to correct the oil level was incorporated into the 420 crawler at serial number 116,146. It also says this change is only regarding 5 speed transmissions, not 4 speed.
At this serial number, the oil fill boss was raised on the transmission, so the bushing is no longer necessary.

I tought it would be a good idea to post the related parts book pages here. That's an interesting observation from Lavoy. If we look in the book of the 420, M4002T-M3552T were installed between 100001-125000. We can see the bushing (43) and when it stopped being used (116145) as Lavoy said.
Without the serial number it's not easy to know if the case needs it or not... unless someone of this board with a 420 and a known serial number can measure it!

Just wondering if there's a down side to doing this (adding the the reducer to increase oil cpacity) if you're not sure it's needed??
I have a 420 that I have no history on, no serial number, the tranny case has been changed and that sums up why I have no idea if I should or not!!
It is 5 speed with reverser.
Any down side to doing this on a 4 speed with reverser to put more oil in it too? Would a little extra oil run slightly cooler as well as put more oil to the reverser??

Most oil filled cases or whatever you want to call them say not to run overfull. In this particular instance, not sure what it would hurt.

I just got a 420 with a 4 speed and it has a bushing in the fill hole? The parts manual doesn't specify 4 or 5 speed? and an article in Green Magazine shows a guy converting a 4 speed into a 5 speed so I'm thinking the cases are the same?
I noticed that the parts manual doesn't give the serial number when the bushing was introduced so would it include the 56 models as well?
