If back firing, it is a lean condition. If sluggish and black smoke, it is a rich condition.
These are true provided the rest of the engine is tuned and set properly.
Back firing can be caused by bad timing, bad spark plugs, etc. The valves can also create issues that appear to be carb related but are not.
A rich condition can be caused by a blocked air intake, the carb does not know it is blocked.
A carb only adjust the amount of fuel for a given throttle setting.
Check to see if air intake is blocked.

2010 marvel schebler carb Thanx Dukeof Deere and JD440icd200
Thanx for the shout guys, After rebuilding carb and installing machine started and ran well good low speed power ,did not push dirt but ran up steep dirt bank forward and reverse crawler did not hesitate then selected next range in gearbox 3-4 in low and high range ran well again did not stumble at all then when engine was at about 160-180 degrees it acted like choke was on or float stuck on and flooded engine out? Removed cab and float was fine. Also one important item I over looked was the set up on the govener . Looked up the info in the parts man. as wellas the shop man and trying to come up with a plan to know how to set up with carb in some better weather. They are exspecting 3/4 inch of rain tommorrow and then back to mid 20 "s by fri. in nepa .so carb will be reinstalled on sat. hopefully.

Were you getting dark smoke from the exhaust? If you were, I would think carb problem. Float sticking or maybe set to high. If you weren't getting dark smoke and it was a temperature sensitive problem, I would think about electrical items. Duke may be correct about the coil or maybe the condenser. I don't know if there is a resistor in the system but, if there is it could be faulty also. The more info you supply us with, the better we can diagnos your problem. gregjo1948

Hey Duke, did not give much thought about coil or condenser when getting hot. also to gregjo1948 I did establish that the float was ok will double check my float adj. as well . I am also doing some looking in to the likage adjustment on the govener,Duke is their a way to bench test the Coil? and condenser? If not napa usually has these items that cross to a JD part#

To quick check the ignition circuit, take off the distributor cap when it's dark and turn over the starter. You should see a consistent spark at the points. If it's intermittent, or non existant, you've identified an ignition problem, and then have to dig deeper. In my case I found multiple potential issues, and I over time wound up changing out the wire harness, coil, points, condenser, and cleaned all electrical connections. My crawler, which appeared to have carb problems ultimately had electrical issues, and has run smoothly for a while now.
Gil (and other good comments) has a post on problem solving the electrical system that involves running a jumper wire that I found helpful in isolating a possible cause - see his comments; the last post in the thread below.
