440ICD air leak????????????????????????

Post by Lavoy » Thu Feb 14, 2013 7:09 pm

Okay, maybe I am dreaming, but I swear that when I had the crawler running in the shop and sprayed some brake cleaner on the blower side of the engine, it seemed to pick up just slightly. On a gas engine, obviously an air leak, but what the heck would it be on a diesel? I can't find any obvious reasons, and was not spraying around the intake elbow, although tried it later with no change.

any air leaks past the blower would be pushing air out not sucking in so the only way that i know of would be you must have gotten some near the intake or you need someone to wake you up

Yeah I know, but I was able to repeat it a couple times, that is what has me stumped. I had the intake elbow off, cleaned it up, and put it back on with gasket sealant so it can't be leaking.

you know, that cold dakota air and spraying that housing might have condensed the air enough to make it do that....maybe formed ice crystals inside? i dont know,,, you got me thinking outside of the box.

Had it in the shop while doing it, so not a cold issue. I was wondering if it could be vapor even though the top of the air cleaner is a ways away. I think I am going to check the steel pipe and the two elbows a little closer just in case.
If the new elbow samples I have coming work, I will replace both of them regardless.

440 ICD air leak

How volatile is brake cleaner? Aerosol propellant is explosive and may be finding a path to your intake. I would think the slightest explosive mist around the intake of an engine with a blower, would be forced into the engine and creating a change in rpm. gregjo1948

Depends on the brake cleaner, but the stuff I am using is probably about like carb cleaner. I thought about that too, but I was spraying about 3 feet from the air cleaner intake in a shop with no breeze, so had ruled that out. Plus, it only occurred when spraying directly in the area of the blower, not any place else.

At a garage I used to work in we regularly substituted brake cleaner for either, mostly trying to get them hateful mercedies benz engines to pick up there fuel after a service. we found the brake less sharp then either for the engine to run on, still had that distinctive sound of a diesel on either but much less harsh.

My brother, who was a wrecker/salvage/dealer of motorcycles and sleds for most of his life, suggested to me that to check the crank seals on sleds spray a little either near the pulley and if the engine picks up a little they are leaking. Perhaps you have a seal, gasket or something similar happening.??
